Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 28 (The Sports Xchange) - Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez will miss 7-10 days with a quad contusion after an MRI showed no structural damage to his left leg, manager Ned Yost said Sunday. Perez had to be helped from the field after colliding with third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert while catching an Adam Eaton foul fly in the ninth inning of the Royals' 8-7 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. The Royals will not place Perez on the disabled list for now, Yost said. Perez is hitting .277 with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in 46 games this season. The team recalled catcher Tony Cruz from Triple-A Omaha on Sunday to serve as the backup for Drew Butera while Perez is sidelined. - - - The Seattle Mariners acquired infielder Patrick Kivlehan from the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Evan Scribner was transferred to the 60-day disabled list with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle. Kivlehan, 26, hit .184 with 17 runs scored, eight doubles, one home run and 16 RBIs in 36 games with Triple-A Round Rock this season. - - - Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz was a late scratch from the lineup Sunday with a sore left foot and listed as day-to-day. Ortiz struck out on a pitch from Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman that hit him on the foot Saturday but was able to continue. - - - Detroit Tigers right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (strained groin) threw a bullpen session before Sunday's game, but manager Brad Ausmus elected against putting him into the rotation for the upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels. Zimmermann has been scheduled for another bullpen session Tuesday in Anaheim. - - - Colorado Rockies catcher Nick Hundley (strained left oblique) is scheduled to play games in extended spring training Monday and Tuesday and begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Albuquerque. Right-hander Adam Ottavino is scheduled to throw his second batting practice Tuesday since undergoing Tommy John surgery May 7, 2015. Barring a setback, Ottavino will join High Class A Modesto on June 9 to begin a rehab assignment. - - - San Diego Padres right-hander Cesar Vargas (elbow soreness) was placed on the disabled list after giving up seven runs on six hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. Left-hander Leonel Campos was recalled from Triple-A El Paso to fill the roster spot. Right-hander Colin Rea is the top candidate to fill that spot in the rotation Thursday against Seattle, Padres manager Andy Green said. Rea is eligible return from El Paso that day. - - - Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Dominic Leone was optioned to Triple-A Reno to make room on the roster for Sunday's starter, right-hander Archie Bradley. - - - Los Angeles Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson had his rehabilitation program interrupted after an MRI discovered biceps tendinitis. Wilson, on the disabled list all season, threw 56 pitches for Class A Inland Empire on Wednesday night and felt discomfort after his bullpen session Saturday. (Editing by Andrew Both)
