Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Aug 3 (The Sports Xchange) - The San Francisco Giants placed All-Star second baseman Joe Panik on the 15-day disabled list on Monday. After treatment Sunday did not help Panik's inflamed lower back, he was placed on the DL and scheduled to fly back to San Francisco on Tuesday to undergo tests to determine the cause. The Giants recalled infielder Kelby Tomlinson from Triple-A Sacramento. -- The Oakland A's activated outfielder Coco Crisp off the disabled list after he had spent two months recovering from a neck injury. The A's also claimed outfielder Danny Valencia off waivers, recalled right-hander Arnold Leon from Triple-A Nashville and demoted reliever Dan Otero and outfielder Jake Smolinski to Nashville. -- Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander A.J. Burnett has been diagnosed with a flexor strain in his pitching elbow and is expected to miss four weeks. The Pirates said the 38-year-old Burnett received a platelet-rich plasma injection. -- The Miami Marlins placed right-hander Carter Capps on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right elbow. They also optioned infielder Donovan Solano to Triple-A New Orleans and recalled catcher Tomas Telis and right-hander Brian Ellington from New Orleans. -- The Chicago Cubs recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa and designated left-hander Clayton Richard for assignment. Dan Haren, acquired in a trade last Friday from the Miami Marlins, will take Richard's spot in the rotation and start Wednesday night against the Pirates. -- The Chicago White Sox recalled outfielder Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Charlotte. He will be used as a utility outfielder while outfielder J.B. Shuck is on the 15-day disabled list. Thompson is the younger brother of Klay Thompson, who plays for the NBA champion Golden State Warriors. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
