April 16 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League Baseball games. - - - Yankees 3, Cubs 0 (first game) Masahiro Tanaka allowed a pair of bunt singles and struck out 10 in eight dominant innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a day-night double-header. Despite chilly and breezy afternoon conditions, Tanaka (2-0) ran his strikeout total to 28 in just three starts. Carlos Beltran homered in the first inning for the Yankees (9-6), who added runs in the fourth and fifth against Chicago (4-10) starter Jason Hammel. - - - Yankees 2, Cubs 0 (second game) Right-hander Michael Pineda scattered four hits in six effective innings and Scott Sizemore had an RBI single as the New York Yankees completed a double-header sweep of the Chicago Cubs. Pineda (2-1) won his second straight start as Brett Gardner also had an RBI single. - - - Braves 1, Phillies 0 Julio Teheran pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout as he out-dueled Cliff Lee to lead Atlanta past Philadelphia. Teheran, the second-year right-hander, retired the first 12 hitters he faced and was aided by Evan Gattis who went 4-for-4 with a solo homer for the Braves (10-4), winners of five straight. Lee (2-2) was a complete-game loser for Philadelphia (6-8), allowing 11 hits while striking out 13 and walking one. - - - Brewers 5, Cardinals 1 Wily Peralta worked into the seventh inning and catcher Jonathan Lucroy had a two-run single as the Milwaukee Brewers avoided a sweep by beating the St Louis Cardinals. Aramis Ramirez went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Brewers (11-4), who took a 4-0 lead and held off National League Central foe St Louis (9-6). - - - Nationals 6, Marlins 3 Pinch-hitter Zach Walters hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the eighth inning to lead the Washington Nationals to a win over the Miami Marlins. A 24-year-old switch-hitting rookie shortstop, Walters gave Washington (9-6) a 4-3 lead and Ian Desmond added a two-run single to clinch the contest. - - - Rangers 3, Mariners 2 The Texas Rangers rallied with two outs in the ninth to beat Seattle as Leonys Martin delivered the winning hit off Mariners closer Fernando Rodney. Kevin Kouzmanoff scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Seattle (7-7) ace Felix Hernandez was in line for the win after striking out nine and allowing one run in seven innings. Hardy each drove in a run, and three Baltimore pitchers combined for a shutout as the Orioles beat the Tampa Bay Rays. Third baseman David Wright had two singles, an RBI and a stolen base and extended his hitting streak to eight games for the Mets (8-7), who are above .500 for the first time this season. - - - Indians 3, Tigers 2 Yan Gomes had a two-run triple in the second inning and the Cleveland Indians held on for a victory over the Detroit Tigers. Indians (7-7) starter Zach McAllister (2-0) held the Tigers to one run on four hits in six innings while striking out four. First baseman Miguel Cabrera drove in both runs for the Tigers (6-5), who have lost five of their last seven. - - - Angels 5, A's 4 (12 innings) Chris Iannetta's two-out home run in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 5-4 win over the Oakland A's. Five Angels (7-8) relievers combined to throw six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit along the way to keep the team in the contest Oakland fell to 10-5 with the loss. - - - Red Sox 6, White Sox 4 (14 innings) Aided by 15 walks, a blown save, two hit batters and three sacrifice flies, Boston snapped a three-game losing streak by outlasting the Chicago White Sox. A two-run double to right field by Jackie Bradley Jr in the top of the 14th off White Sox utility infielder Leury Garcia provided the winning runs in a marathon game that lasted five hours and 17 minutes. Boston improved to 6-9 while the White Sox fell to 8-7. - - - Giants 2, Dodgers 1 Pablo Sandoval drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the seventh inning and five pitchers combined to hold the Los Angeles Dodgers to six hits, leading the San Francisco Giants to victory over their National League West rivals. A second consecutive loss in San Francisco could have been worse for the Dodgers (9-6), who sent star shortstop Hanley Ramirez for X-rays after he was hit on the back of his left hand by Giants (10-5) right-hander Ryan Vogelsong while leading off the seventh inning. The X-rays were negative. - - - Royals 6, Astros 4 (11 innings) Third baseman Mike Moustakas slapped a leadoff home run in the top of the 11th inning and the Kansas City Royals rallied against the Houston Astros' bullpen for a win. Royals second baseman Omar Infante added a run-scoring fielder's choice off Astros right-hander Jerome Williams (0-1) to complete the comeback for Kansas City, who trailed 4-2 entering the seventh inning. - - - Padres 4, Rockies 2 Andrew Cashner pitched 7 1/3 strong innings to lead San Diego past the Colorado Rockies.
