April 2 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League Baseball games. - - - Tigers 2, Royals 1 (10 innings) Ian Kinsler, whose fourth-inning home run gave Detroit their first run of the game, laced an RBI single to left center with two out in the bottom of the 10th to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Max Scherzer allowed one run and struck out seven over eight innings for the Tigers (2-0) before Al Alburquerque (1-0) got the victory for working a scoreless 10th. Kansas City outfielder Alex Gordon delivered a sacrifice-fly in the ninth inning to tie the game at 1-1 and send it to extra innings but the Royals suffered their second one-run defeat to Detroit. - - - Red Sox 6, Orioles 2 Boston's David Ortiz and Mike Napoli each hit two-run homers, leading the Red Sox to victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Boston's John Lackey was impressive in his first start and allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts and one walk over six innings. - - - Athletics 6, Indians 1 (first game) Left-hander Scott Kazmir made an impressive debut for the Oakland A's against his former team, allowing no runs and three hits in 7 1/3 innings in a victory over the Cleveland Indians. Kazmir, who signed a two-year contract with the A's as a free agent, got big run support from his new team including three hits from Derek Norris. - - - Indians 6, Athletics 4 (second game) Center fielder Michael Brantley ripped a two-run single off closer Jim Johnson in a three-run ninth inning rally as the Cleveland Indians came from behind to beat the Oakland A's and earn a split in the first-ever day-night doubleheader. Brantley finished with three RBIs to lead the Indians (2-1). - - - Braves 1, Brewers 0 Third baseman Chris Johnson hit his first home run of the season and Aaron Harang took a no-hitter into the seventh as the Braves beat the Brewers. Johnson's home run in the seventh inning broke up a no-hit bid by Milwaukee (1-2) right-hander Matt Garza, who was brilliant in his Brewers debut, scattering two hits and a walk over eight innings with seven strikeouts. Harang allowed two hits in 6 2/3 innings to get the win for Atlanta (2-1). - - - White Sox 7, Twins 6 (11 innings) Second baseman Leury Garcia scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Chicago White Sox claimed a come-from-behind victory over the Minnesota Twins. The White Sox (2-0) scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth against Twins (0-2) left-handed reliever Glen Perkins to forge a 6-6 tie and send it to extra innings. - - - Blue Jays 3, Rays 0 Jose Bautista crushed two homers to back up left-hander Mark Buehrle's dominant regular-season debut as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays. Buehrle carved through Tampa Bay's lineup for 8 2/3 scoreless innings and had 11 strikeouts - his highest strikeout total since April 16, 2005. - - - Nationals 5, Mets 1 Washington pitcher Gio Gonzalez allowed one run in six innings and helped his own cause by hitting a solo homer in the fifth inning as the Nationals beat the New York Mets. Shortstop Ian Desmond homered leading off the fifth to break a tie and catapult the Nationals (2-0) to their second straight comeback victory against the Mets (0-2). In Monday's season opener, Washington came back from deficits of 3-0, 4-2 and 5-4 to beat the Mets 9-7 in 10 innings. - - - Rockies 6, Marlins 5 In his first start after tossing a no-hitter in his 2013 finale, Henderson Alvarez lasted just three innings as Colorado chased him to get their first win of the season. The Rockies (1-2) scored three times in the first and fourth innings. Catcher Jordan Pacheco, getting the start for Wilin Rosario, went 3-for-4 with singles in his first three at-bats. - - - Pirates 4, Cubs 3 (16 innings) Tony Sanchez's pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 16th inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a victory over the Chicago Cubs in the longest game in terms of time in Pittsburgh history. The marathon lasted five hours and 55 minutes. Emillio Bonifacio had five hits for the Cubs (0-2) who scored in the ninth to send it to extra innings, and again in the top of the 12th before Pittsburgh answered in the bottom half. - - - Dodgers 5, Padres 1 Dan Haren allowed one unearned run on four hits over six innings, and shortstop Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run double and scored two runs as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Padres. The win was the second straight for the Dodgers (4-1), who suffered their lone loss of the season Sunday night in the Padres' season opener. - - - Mariners 8, Angels 2 Mike Zunino smacked a three-run home run, Justin Smoak continued his hot hitting with a ninth-inning home run and Seattle swept their three-game series with the Los Angeles Angels. The Mariners out-scored the Angels 26-8 in the series while sweeping a season-opening set for just the second time in club history (1985). - - - Rangers 4, Phillies 3 Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon's bases loaded walk to Texas left fielder Shin-Soo Choo forced in the winning run, capping a three-run ninth inning rally, for a Rangers comeback win. Texas (2-1) also got a run-scoring single in the ninth from Leonys Martin who finished with two RBIs. - - - Astros 3, Yankees 1 Jarred Cosart tossed five scoreless innings as the Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees and claimed the season-opening series. Dexter Fowler and Matt Dominguez both homered for the Astros (0-2) while the Yankees (0-2) stranded eight baserunners and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. - - - Reds 1, Cardinals 0 Pinch-hitter Chris Heisey's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to a victory over the St Louis Cardinals in a game that was delayed more than two hours by rain. Tony Cingrani tossed seven scoreless innings and J.J. Hoover pitched the ninth and got the win for the Reds. - - - Giants 2, Diamondbacks 0 Tim Hudson threw 7 2/3 shutout innings in his San Francisco debut and Angel Pagan drove in one run and saved another in the Giants' victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
