Jonathan Tah has emerged as one of the top transfer targets for FC Barcelona for the summer of 2025, given that he will be a free agent, with his contract at Bayer Leverkusen expiring.

The La Liga leaders had shown an interest in the German international last summer itself but the move did not materialise due to Leverkusen’s reluctance to part ways with their key player.

However, with no indications of a renewal, Tah appears bound to leave the club in the summer, and it appears that Barcelona are in pole position to sign him.

Negotiations advanced

Indeed, according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, negotiations between Barcelona and Jonathan Tah are already at an advanced stage.

Confirming reports from earlier today, the Italian journalist adds that the Blaugrana are indeed leading the race to sign the 28-year-old German centre-back.

As has previously been reported, clubs like Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Inter Milan, among others, have shown an interest in the Bundesliga title-winner, but it is Barça who are frontrunners.

In fact, the Catalans’ manager Hansi Flick is himself involved in the operation, hoping that a full agreement is reached to sign his compatriot on a free transfer.

Tah’s arrival could lead to exits

Barcelona already have a well-stocked centre-back department with players like Pau Cubarsi, Ronald Araujo, Inigo Martinez, Andreas Christensen, Eric Garcia, and young Sergi Dominguez.

With Tah likely to arrive at the end of the season, the Catalan heavyweights will likely have to sacrifice one or two of their current central defenders to free up space and avoid having a bloated defensive unit.

The names of Christensen and Garcia have been doing the rounds as possible candidates to be sold.

In fact, earlier today, it was claimed that Barcelona could be ready to part ways with Christensen in January itself for a fee of €30 million in order to facilitate the registration of Dani Olmo in La Liga.
