On Background: Meet Mike Kaye, our Carolina Panthers beat reporter

Charlotte Observer Carolina Panthers beat writer Mike Kaye

This mini Q&A vignette is a part of an going series called “On Background” to reacquaint readers with the team of journalists working in our newsroom. Responses edited for clarity.

Mike Kaye joined the Charlotte Observer last September and covers the Carolina Panthers.

A seasoned sports reporter, Mike previously covered the entire NFL for the Pro Football Network. He also has covered the Philadelphia Eagles for NJ Advance Media and the Jacksonville Jaguars for First Coast News.

Mike has been in journalism — including television and digital production — since 2011.

He is a graduate of the University of North Florida.

How did you get into journalism?

I grew up wanting to be a story-teller. After my plan for film school fell through, I decided journalism was a great way to continue my passion for story-telling. While I originally started in broadcasting, my desire for writing eventually took over and here I am.

What excites you about this field?

As a sports journalist, the daily grind can be both familiar and unexpected. I like the challenge of covering 60-plus players, a coaching staff of 20-25 and a front office with various responsibilities. I like the idea of being the primary source for something that fans and readers view as an escape.

What is the most interesting aspect of your beat/job?

The news cycle in the NFL is 24/7, so it takes a lot of discipline and time to cover the beat correctly. Fans constantly want information to the smallest detail; in order to deliver, you simply can’t take your foot off the gas.

Words of wisdom you’ve received?

“Always write about the quarterback.” It’s true, that position is always on the fan base’s mind, win or lose.

Proud life moments? Something you’d like to improve?

I’ve covered a lot of special events in my career but I think my proudest moment was covering a London game at Wembley Stadium. It was kind of a special “pinch-myself” moment. I’d also say covering the AFC Championship in 2018 and joining the Observer in September were up there. It was cool to see my mom buy my first Sunday feature when she came up to visit last fall.

I’d love to improve my familiarity with Charlotte and North Carolina. I’m most recently a New Jersey guy so I’m still learning the city and its various venues.

Fun fact about you?

I’ve lived in four different states within the past decade: Arizona, Florida, New Jersey and North Carolina.
