Austria vs France LIVE: Euro 2024 result as Kylian Mbappe forced off with bloody nose

France overcame the potentially difficult hurdle of an in-form Austria as they got their Euro 2024 campaign up and running with a 1-0 victory courtesy of an own goal, but talisman Kylian Mbappe suffered a worrying injury.

It proved a very mixed night for France’s captain Mbappe though as he was left still searching for his first goal in a European Championship and went off bloodied late on with a suspected broken nose.

Austria, with one defeat in their last 16 matches, stood their ground and went close through Christoph Baumgartner after 37 minutes but a minute later France struck when a brilliant piece of wing play by Mbappe took him to the byline and his cross was deflected into his own net by the head of Max Wober.

Mbappe, who has never scored a European Championship goal, looked certain to break that duck after 55 minutes but shot wide when clean through and, though Marcus Thuram and Ousmane Dembele also went close, the 2022 World Cup runners-up could not find a second and had to endure a few defensive scares before clinching the win.

Read Miguel Delaney’s report, from Dusseldorf:

23:20 , Kieran Jackson

It was as a gallant but defeated Austria pressed that a certain push-and-pull became all the clearer with this French team. They are a side that obstinately waits for the opposition, as everyone watching on waits for their great star to do something.

That sense has only been amplified in the last week, with how Kylian Mbappe made himself the main headline of Euro 2024 as well as the main event in how he spoke out about the “importance” of the French elections. It wasn’t quite a signature performance to follow but it did have a significant impact.

In an obdurate 1-0 win over Austria, Mbappe forced the only goal with a cross that deflected in off Maximilian Wöber’s head. He then wasted a huge opportunity with one uncharacteristic miss from a one-on-one before getting booked for time-wasting after suffering what looked like a broken nose. He was then booed off by Austrian fans rather than roared off in the way he has maybe become accustomed.

HALF-TIME: Austria 0-1 France

20:49 , Kieran Jackson

Really good game this!

France lead at the break after that own-goal from Austria defender Max Wober but Ralf Rangnick’s team have given a good account of themselves so far.

Yet the French’s sheer pace in attack has been fierce at times - and they deservedly lead in Dusseldorf!

Austria are clumsy not to clear at the back and Kylian Mbappe makes the difference! He crosses in after beating his man down the right and Maximilian Wöber is the unlucky man to head the ball into the far corner of his own net!

Fortunate for France, desperate for Austria! The favourites lead...

Austria 0-0 France

20:38 , Kieran Jackson

36 mins: Huge chance for Austria squandered!

Captain Marcel Sabitzer cushions the ball perfectly from a cross out wide, playing in Christoph Baumgartner on goal but he can’t lift the ball up and beyond Mike Maignan - who saves impressively!

And Baumgartner looks to the sky - what a moment that was!

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

Austria 0-0 France

20:35 , Kieran Jackson

34 mins: Ousmane Dembele just too quick for Austria left back Phillipp Mwene on the byline - and the defender is the second man in the book!

Griezmann over the free-kick again... but again he can’t make it count and Austria clear at the near post!

Austria 0-0 France

20:32 , Kieran Jackson

31 mins: France forward Marcus Thuram down on the floor after being bodychecked by Austria defender Kevin Danso.

Nothing wrong with that in my opinion - Danso held his ground - and the referee agrees.

Game has just gone a bit stagnant in the last 10 minutes or so.

Austria 0-0 France

20:28 , Kieran Jackson

27 mins: Bit better from Austria in the last five minutes, which just a few glimpses of their attacking talent.

20:20 , Kieran Jackson

19 mins: Wasteful from Griezmann!

Rabiot pounces in midfield but Griezmann goes solo in the box and his shot is blocked, with Dembele speeding down the wing outside him!

Austria 0-0 France

20:18 , Kieran Jackson

17 mins: Austria centre-back Maximilian Wober the first name in the book for a rough challenge on Ousmane Dembele just outside the box!

No complaints can be had!

Yet Griezmann again can’t take advantage, with his cross in comfortable for keeper Pentz.

France on top, with Austria keen to be physical early on!

Austria 0-0 France

20:15 , Kieran Jackson

13 mins: Hernandez is such a threat down the left for France!

He’s played in on the left-side of the box and his cross is aching for a touch - but no-one is there to tap it in!

Austria need to nullify that threat a tad quicker here... Ralf Rangnick’s team are pressing pretty high early on, which is leaving plenty of space for France if they can beat the Austrian press!

Austria 0-0 France

20:10 , Kieran Jackson

9 mins: First chance for Kylian Mbappe!

Hernandez plays in the French captain down the left and with the angle tight, Pentz makes a good save at his near post as the ball clatters off him and into the side-netting!

Here are the confirmed line-ups for today’s clash in Dusseldorf:

Austria: Pentz; Posch, Wober, Danso, Mwene; Laimer, Seiwald; Grillitsch, Sabitzer, Baumgartner; Gregoritsch

France: Maignan; Koundé, Saliba, Upamecano, Hernández; Griezmann, Kanté, Rabiot; Dembélé, Thuram, Mbappé

Austria coach Ralf Rangnick on their Euro 2024 opener:

18:44 , Kieran Jackson

“With France we might have the strongest opponents of all right at the start [of the tournament]. They are the absolute favourites for the title, not only at this EURO, but also in two years at the World Cup.

“France surely must be the nation with the highest quality. Even if the starting XI are injured, the 11 substitutes are not much weaker. So the first match will be a huge challenge.

“Afterwards, we’ll see. We’ll only know our next opponents in March after the play-off games. And then the third match is against the Netherlands.

“If you want to get through that group, you’ll need at least four, but maybe even five or six points, and we’re aware of that situation.”

France boss Didier Deschamps on William Saliba:

18:17 , Kieran Jackson

“William is one of the very best defenders in the Premier League. I want him to do what he does very well at Arsenal. He had a very, very good season.

“He played many matches, especially with his partner Gabriel, and they were a fundamental part of what Arsenal did this season, particularly in the defensive aspect.

“With us, he has not had the same playing time. There are automatisms which develop through playing matches together. You have repetition and understanding.

“With a national team, we always have so little time, but now they have the possibility of living together for a few weeks and that is even better.”

France kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Austria as tournament favourites in their Group D opener in Dusseldorf.

Les Bleues were stunned in the last-16 by Switzerland at Euro 2020 before going on to reach the World Cup final in Qatar to continue their impressive recent record at major tournaments under Didier Deschamps.

Kylian Mbappe will be looking to score his first goal at the Euros after shining at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups - the new Real Madrid forward missed the decisive penalty as France were knocked out three years ago.

France’s strength and depth and tournament record should see them progress from a tricky Group D, which includes the Netherlands and Poland, but Austria have been transformed under Ralf Rangnick and are ones to watch.

What is the team news?

France head coach Didier Deschamps has an abundance of options at his disposal. The big questions surround whether he opts for Arsenal’s William Saliba or Liverpool’s Ibrahim Konate alongside Dayot Upamecano in defence, whether Adrian Rabiot is selected alongside N’Golo Kante and Antoine Griezmann in midfield, and if Marcus Thuram starts up front alongside Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.

Austria have been hit by a couple of injury blows ahead of the Euros, with David Alaba sidelined for the tournament. The Real Madrid defender is with the squad as a travelling captain, while Xaver Schlager was ruled out as well. In midfield, Konrad Laimer and Marcel Sabitzer will run the engine room.

Good evening

17:00 , Jamie Braidwood

France get their Euro 2024 campaign underway in Group D with a tantilising match versus Austria. Les Bleus are hotly tipped as one of the favourites to win this tournament having finished second in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a very similar squad at their disposal.

Manager Didier Deschamps takes charge of his sixth major tournament with France and should he lead France to glory in Germany, he will become only the second person to win a European Championship as both a player and a manager – a feat he has already achieved with the World Cup following France’s 2018 triumph.

However, France face an interesting team for their opening match in Ralf Rangnick’s Austria. On the back of an impressive qualifying campaign that saw them finish second behind Belgium, the Austrians favour a high pressing game with pace in transition.
