Well, it’s exactly what the International Cricket Council would have wanted, a thrilling Test match that has come down to the final day.

India will break records and do something unimaginable if they are able to chase down 444, after resuming on the start of day five on 164 for three.

Crucially for India, Virat Kohli is still at the crease, and while a victory might be a long shot, there is a chance they could bat out the day and the match finish in a draw.

The game was handed an additional level of bite at the end of the fourth day when the third umpire had to get involved over a stunning low catch from Cameron Green, but the decision was upheld, Shubman Gill was on his way, and the Australian judged to have just got his hands underneath the ball.

India have now lost the only two World Test Championship finals, and to be honest after Australia’s first innings, they were never in the match.

Australia have dominated from the outside, while no Indian player scored a century, and despite some resistance on day four, victory was wrapped up in the first session of day five.

Victory and the trophy will be lifted by Australia, but it may end up being a footnote of their summer with the highly-anticipated Ashes series due to start next week.

Those two quick wickets have really broken India’s hopes of resisting until the end of the day and sharing the trophy at The Oval.

There have been signs held up about praying for rain, which appears unlikely in the 30 degree heat around in London.

From an England perspective however, they will hope that the Australian bowers are kept out in the field for as long as possible, with the start of the Ashes now less than a week away.
