The oak trees at the iconic Toomer’s Corner in Auburn have once again been replaced.

The latest replacement happened over the weekend. The trees had to be replaced after a man set fire to one of the trees after Auburn beat LSU in September.

As is tradition, the trees were rolled with toilet paper following Auburn’s last-second win (that cost LSU coach Les Miles his job). A man set fire to the toilet paper, which then burned one of the trees.

“The fire in September severely damaged the Magnolia Avenue tree,” Gary Keever, an Auburn horticultural professor, said in a release last week. “The appearance of the tree is unacceptable, and we don’t believe it will recover within a reasonable time period.”

The trees made it approximately two years before having to be swapped out. The replaced trees were installed in 2015 after Alabama fan Harvey Updyke poisoned the trees in 2010, the same year Auburn beat Alabama on the way to a national title win. The trees Updyke poisoned had to eventually be cut down and the soil needed to be healthy before the replacement trees were planted.

Jochen Wiest, the man who set fire to the trees in September was arrested soon after the incident. He pled guilty to the charge and owes Auburn nearly $21,000 in restitution. Hopefully the latest trees can make it a lot longer than their immediate predecessors.
