Auburn QB Sean White said he played Saturday's loss hurt and didn't tell coaches

Auburn quarterback Sean White said he aggravated the injury to his right throwing shoulder during Saturday’s loss to Georgia, but didn’t inform coaches about the severity.

White said the injury occurred early in the 13-7 loss after a hit.

“Just being a competitor, I wanted to win, I wanted to be out there playing,” White said. “I don’t know if I really let them know how bad it was hurting me. That’s on me and I have to do a better job of just being honest.

“Because maybe the best chance to win might be somebody else if I’m not healthy enough.”

White had his worst game of the season completing just 6 of 20 passes for 27 yards. During the second half, White threw a pick-six during the first minute of the third quarter that tied the game and he went on to miss nine consecutive passes. He completed just 2 of 11 passes for eight yards in the second half and the Tigers failed to gain a first down.

Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee said Sunday he should have called more running plays during the loss. Auburn came into the contest averaging 53.6 carries and 299.8 rushing yards. Against the Bulldogs, the Tigers had just 127 yards on 32 carries, including just eight carries in the second half.

“We should have run the football,” Lashlee said. “We were running it well enough to say we have a pretty good chance to getting it. With the exception of one call, we had a chance to pick them up but we dropped a ball here, we missed a block there but going back, our O-line is healthy and I don’t know if it’s the flow of the game or the feel but if I were to do it over again, we’d run the ball.”

However, Lashlee also said he thought White, who came into Saturday’s game leading the SEC in completion percentage and passer efficiency, gave the Tigers the best chance to win the game.

“When we started the game, there was no reason for us to believe Sean wasn’t healthy enough to win the game for us,” Lashlee said. “And to be honest with you, I know he got hit early in the game. And the kind of kid he is, he was going to fight tooth and nail. There was really no indication at that point that there was a reason to take him out for injury. … There was no reason to take him out. I think, for whatever reason, people are trying to put a lot more on him than is fair.”

The loss ended Auburn’s bid for a shot at the SEC West title.
