Aston Villa have joined the race to sign Alessio Romagnoli from AC Milan with reports claiming Steven Gerrard has a great chance of landing the free agent.

The 27-year-old is in demand as his contract with Milan is set to come to an end. Indeed there has been strong interest from Chelsea and Newcastle in the past few weeks. Villa are now in the hunt and reports in Italy say they have a good chance of signing him.

Newcastle were thought to be in the box seat after offering Romagnoli a reported £66,000 a week. Such a deal would have been difficult for the defender to turn down.

However the Magpies may now withdraw their interest, leaving the way clear for Villa to swoop. Newcastle are said to be on the verge of landing top target Sven Botman from French club Lille.

They have been chasing Botman for months and could finally land their man. Reports claim that Newcastle are close to a £38.7million deal for the central defender.

Eddie Howe’s men have already signed Dan Burn this summer. So with Botman also in the bag they will drop their interest in Romagnoli.

It is good news for Villa who could now have a free run at the player. That is according to the Italian publication Corriere dello Sport who say Villa are now in the hunt.

Gerrard has already signed Diego Carlos this summer. The Brazilian defender penning a four-year deal and Villa paying £26million to get him on board.

However that will not stop him making a move for Romagnoli. Developments are expected soon as the player’s contract with Milan ends next week. He will want his future sorting as soon as possible and his future could be with Villa.

Alessio Romagnoli would be a shrewd signing

The capture of Romagnoli on a free transfer would be a shrewd bit of business by Villa. Yes he will command a sizeable outlay in wages but will be worth with it no transfer fee to Milan involved.

Romagnoli has vast experience. Anyone who has made 247 appearances for AC Milan has something about them. He has also chipped in with 10 goals during that time.

The central defender has 12 caps for Italy and certainly has was it takes to play in the Premier League. The competition will be fierce though. Newcastle may have pulled out but they were not the only interested party.

Chelsea, Tottenham, Everton, Sevilla and Bayern Munich have also been linked. Therefore Villa will need to move quick to have a chance of completing a deal.
