'You would never guess I am a football manager!' - Arsene Wenger has given away every medal won with Arsenal

Arsene Wenger will become the most successful manager in FA Cup history if Arsenal beat Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday yet the 67-year-old revealed on the eve of the game that he has not kept a single medal from his illustrious career.

Wenger could win the world’s oldest cup competition for a seventh time to add to three Premier League titles, six Community Shields in addition to four further honours from his time at Nagoya Grampus in Japan and Monaco.

Standard Sport understands Wenger has handed over certain minor prizes - including Manager of the Month awards – to be auctioned for charity and Wenger claimed before the 2015 Final against Aston Villa that he had no idea where his more celebrated medals were.

Former Gunners captain Tony Adams suggested in his recent autobiography that Wenger was so furious at losing the 2001 Cup Final to Liverpool that he threw his medal in the bin.

But Wenger said: “Don’t trust too much to what Tony Adams says. I don’t know. I don’t remember. I have no medal at home anyway – from anything. You come to my home you will be surprised. There is no trophy, no medal, nothing.

“I give them always out. There is always a guy at the club who did not get a medal. A member of staff. I have given it to him. So you are always a medal short and you will always find someone who takes it.

“I am not back looker. I am always forward. At home, you would not even guess that I am a football manager, apart from the fact that a football game is on!

“I am not separated from football. I am completely in football. I watch the game that is on on the night but I don’t look back what we have won, what we have done and all that. Or what we have lost.

“Maybe one day I will have to look back. If I have health, certainly no. It depends on my health. I will not always manage but I will always be involved in the game.”

Wenger claimed he has no pictures of his achievements adorning the walls of his house, does not keep a diary or even any memorabilia from Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ season of 2003-04.

Despite a sustained desire to look forward, Wenger brought up parallels between facing Chelsea and the 2005 Cup Final against Manchester United, where Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were clear favourites, dominated the game but lost in a penalty shoot-out.

Conte had suggested Arsenal were the more likely winners but Wenger said: “Chelsea think we are favourites? He can think what he wants. If he can justify it during the game it is even better.

“Chelsea is favourites. It’s very close. We’ll see. Of course, I expect us to win. It’s true that in neutral opinions, Chelsea will be favourites. But we have gone into finals like that as well.

“I remember in 2005 we had no players available anymore. I played with Dennis Bergkamp up front against Manchester United who had [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Wayne] Rooney, [Ryan] Giggs, [Paul] Scholes. We won, maybe without deserving it, but we won it.”
