AP Top 25 college football poll: Will Alabama’s win over Georgia move the Tide to No. 1?

Nick Saban is gone, but Alabama keeps doing Alabama things.

Does that mean the No. 4 Crimson Tide should be No. 1?

Saturday night’s thrilling 41-34 win over No. 2 Georgia gives Alabama a strong case to vault past Texas and into the top spot when the new Associated Press Top 25 poll comes out Sunday at 2 p.m.

Texas moved past Georgia to No. 1 after its impressive 31-12 win at Michigan on Sept. 7. Alabama (4-0) rolled through three nonconference games, including a 42-10 win at Wisconsin. But Saturday’s win in its SEC opener is different and could cause voters to vault the Tide past Texas (5-0) in the rankings.

Elsewhere in the top 10, two spots in that group appear available after No. 6 Mississippi lost 20-17 and No. 10 Utah fell 23-10 to Arizona. Two losses, both at home, to unranked teams will cause the Rebels and Utes to tumble.

Maybe No. 12 Michigan (4-1) will return to the top 10 after its 27-24 win over Minnesota on Saturday. No. 13 Southern California (3-1) could, as well, after it rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Wisconsin, 38-21.

No. 11 Missouri (4-0) fell out of the top 10, without a loss, last week because it struggled before beating Vanderbilt, 30-27, in double overtime. The Tigers were off this week so they don’t have a strong win to put in the voters’ minds. But Utah and Ole Miss losses give Missouri and opportunity to move back up.

Who might fall out of the rankings? It’s likely that no one will.

No. 19 Illinois suffered its first loss but it was a 21-7 setback to No. 9 Penn State.

No. 20 Oklahoma State also lost on Saturday but it was on the road to No. 23 Kansas State, 42-20. That’s a lopsided margin but it was to another ranked team so a case can be made to keep the Cowboys in the rankings.

The ACC had three teams ranked last week and that doesn’t figure to change. No. 7 Miami (5-0) survived to beat Virginia Tech, 38-34, on Friday night.

On Saturday, No. 15 Louisville suffered its first loss, 31-24, but it came to No. 16 Notre Dame. So the Cardinals (3-1) don’t look like a team that will fall out of the poll.

No. 17 Clemson will move up after the Tigers (3-1) rolled past ACC newcomer Stanford, 40-14.

Duke (5-0) and Pittsburgh (4-0) are in position to join the rankings, but it will have to be the coming weeks provided they keep winning and teams at the bottom of the rankings lose to open up available spots.
