Once again, Anthony Davis has informed the San Francisco 49ers that he no longer wants to play football.

Davis, 26, considered retirement prior to the 49ers’ first game this season after initially stepping aside from the game in June 2015, citing health reasons. On Monday, he did not waver — he no longer plans to play.

After telling the team he felt great this summer and wanted to continue his career, it appeared the 49ers would have more depth at tackle. The former first-round pick had been a promising young player, starting 16 games at right tackle in each of his first four NFL seasons.

But Davis started having doubts this season and suffered a concussion. Davis played three of a possible 81 snaps on offense in the 49ers’ opener against the Los Angeles Rams and was inactive Week 2 against the Carolina Panthers and Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks while dealing with the concussion.

Joe Staley and Trent Brown will continue to start at tackle. The 49ers allowed a whopping 53 sacks last season but have allowed only two so far this year, tied for the fewest in the NFL.

Concussions affected Davis’ career, and he’s the latest in a long line of younger players who are willing to step away from the game amid health concerns.
