Andy Murray turns to new coach in doubles specialist Jonny O’Mara

Andy Murray has added a new coach to his entourage ahead of the grasscourt swing with doubles specialist Jonny O’Mara.

The 28-year-old was in Murray’s box at the recent challenger event in Bordeaux and is believed to have agreed terms to work with Murray for at least half the year.

The appointment of O’Mara does not affect Ivan Lendl’s position, with Lendl remaining as head coach for the remainder of the season. Mark Hilton will also maintain his role as a coach in the set-up.

The news coincides with the start of Murray’s Wimbledon build-up. He takes on South Korea’s Chung Hyeon in the first round at the relatively low-key Surbiton on Monday afternoon.

O’Mara is set to offer the greater option of a travelling coach to more ATP events unlike both Lendl and Hilton.

Despite his new appointment O’Mara is expected to play in the men’s doubles at Wimbledon alongside fellow Brit Liam Broady in what is being seen as his doubles farewell before pursuing his coaching career.

Murray, meanwhile, opted to forego the ongoing French Open in a bid to be fully fit and prepared for a tilt at Wimbledon at the age of 36.
