Ottawa Senators goaltender Andrew Hammond has a torn labrum in his right hip and will have surgery in the near future to correct the issue, ending his 2016-17 season.

According to the Senators, Hammond will be allowed to begin skating again in approximately 12 weeks.

The 29-year-old Hammond played just six games this season for Ottawa and held a 4.08 goal-against average and .837 save percentage. In five games with the Binghamton Senators, Hammond had a 3.24 goal-against average and .884 save percentage.

Hammond has battled injuries all season, suffering a groin injury on Oct. 30 against the Calgary Flames and then a high ankle sprain on Nov. 18 against the New York Islanders. He has also gone through waivers twice in 2016-17. Hammond played his last NHL game this season on Feb. 7 and last AHL game on Feb. 20.

In early November, Ottawa acquired Mike Condon from the Pittsburgh Penguins, which pushed Hammond down on the depth chart. Condon has played well for Ottawa with a 17-10-5 record to go along with a 2.49 goal-against average and .913 save percentage. The Senators have reportedly started contract talks with Condon – an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Hammond burst onto the NHL scene with the Senators in 2014-15 going 20-1-2 with a 1.79 goal-against average and .941 save percentage in helping them make a furious end-of-year push into the playoffs. Senators fans also embraced Hammond and his nickname ‘The Hamburglar’ by throwing hamburgers on the ice during his starts. Before 2014-15, Hammond had played just one NHL game.

Ottawa then gave Hammond a three-year contract extension worth $4.05 million. He still has one season remaining on the deal.
