Ander Herrera 'ready' to feature in Manchester United’s Carabo Cup tie with Derby, says Jose Mourinho

Ander Herrera will be available for Manchester United’s Carabao Cup tie against Derby County on Tuesday after recovering from an ankle injury, manager Jose Mourinho has said.

The Spaniard has been sidelined since the 2-0 win at Burnley earlier this month but after three weeks of rehabilitation the midfielder is now fit for selection.

Nemanja Matic could also return, having sat out Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Wolves due to suspension, but Tuesday night’s clash comes too early for Marcus Rashford who has one match left of his three-game ban.

“Ander is ready,” Mourinho told MUTV on Monday. “Marcos Rojo is the only player that is not available through injury and it’s Marcus Rashford’s last suspension match."

Diogo Dalot is set to feature against Derby after making his debut in United’s Champions League win over Swiss champions Young Boys.

“Obviously people liked what they saw in the match against Young Boys,” Mourinho added. “This is an English competition, the different salt and pepper that English competitions have and I think it is good for him, for his development, for him to be ready for the top flight as soon as possible.”

Although Tuesday’s match will be United’s third in seven days, Mourinho insisted he was “not thinking too much” about squad rotation.

“I’m just thinking about the matches and this one is a cup match and the rules change,” he said.

“After a draw you go straight to a penalty shootout, which obviously is a 50/50 situation. So it is a match of 90 minutes, which we have to try and win, and the choice of the players is based on that.”
