Yahoo Sports Among Us 2 canceled as developers double down on first game:
The highly anticipated party game Among Us 2 has been canceled just a month after it was announced.
InnerSloth, the developer and publisher behind Among Us, published a blog post detailing the future of Among Us. After observing Among Us’s massive surge in popularity in 2020, the team decided to scrap Among Us 2 and add all the planned updates into Among Us instead.
“What content goes into Among Us 2?” InnerSloth wrote on its Itch.io page. “The main reason we are shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content. However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level. We have decided to cancel Among Us 2 and instead put all our focus into improving Among Us 1. All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1.”
Among Us has become one of the biggest Cinderella stories in gaming. When the game launched in 2018, it was met with a lukewarm reception and middling sales. Despite this, InnerSloth faithfully kept updating and improving the game for the sake of its hardcore fans.
Then suddenly in 2020, the game enjoyed a tremendous boost among content creators in Korea, Mexico and Brazil. When popular Twitch streamer Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris began streaming Among Us in July with other streamers, that’s when the game exploded in the United States, Canada and Europe.
Among Us now has over at least 4 million players and is one of the most popular games on Steam, according to Steam Database. Not bad for a game that was made by a team of only three people.
This success is largely due to the fact that Among Us is very streamer-friendly. Players all play crewmembers of a starship in a premise that can basically be described as Mafia in space.
At the beginning of the game, certain players will be randomly selected to be imposters (one to three depending on the lobby size). You have to observe, accuse and debate with your lobby to figure out who the imposters are and vote to space them. If you’re an imposter, your goal is to deceive the rest of the crew as you silently kill them one by one.
If you’re interested in playing, Among Us is only $5 on Steam and free on the App Store and Google Play. You can play with random people through matchmaking but the game really shines when you’re playing with friends.
Just don’t go making any bets you can’t deliver on. Ninja still has to pay his left nut to Disguised Toast.
