Alex Ovechkin toboggans down Great Wall, feasts while in China

No one does summer quite like Alex Ovechkin.

The Washington Capitals captain doesn’t have the Stanley Cup to party with this year, but he’s still making the most of his off-season. Ovechkin was in China serving as an international ambassador for the NHL this week, and soaked up tourist life to the fullest.

Ovechkin paid a visit to the Great Wall of China (or is it the GR8 Wall now?) dressed in his Capitals sweater, which must have been extremely uncomfortable given the sweltering heat. The 33-year-old was a good sport about the temperature, joking that he needed to find some water. Whether it’s chugging beer with Lord Stanley, or sipping some H2O atop the Great Wall, Ovechkin definitely understands the importance of staying hydrated.

After taking a charlift up to the summit, it was how Ovi got down that seemed like the best time.

Yes, that was Ovechkin tobogganing down one of the Wonders of the World. Did he enjoy the experience? You bet.

“It was fun. Really fun,” Ovechkin beamed after successfully navigating the 1.5-km trail.

The Russian superstar also enjoyed a Chinese feast, and was lucky enough to be sitting in the host’s seat, which traditionally means he would have to pick up the bill. That’s probably not an issue for a man who signed a $124-million contract, and he didn’t seem too concerned about the honour. Highlights from the menu included goose liver, Kung Pao prawns, pigeon, and the pièce de résistance, Peking duck.

Of course, Ovechkin also found time to give back to the Chinese community during his trip, hosting a ball hockey clinic and an autograph signing session.

Another successful summer adventure in the books.
