Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has left Monday’s tilt against Utah Hockey Club after a knee-on-knee collision.

In the third period, Ovechkin was skating when he collided with Jack McBain in an apparent knee-on-knee collision. He needed help getting up, and ultimately went down the tunnel and did not return.

Here’s the collision:

Head coach Spencer Carbery told reporters in Salt Lake City that Ovechkin is currently being evaluated. Washington won 6-2.

The 39-year-old scored twice in the victory before leaving the game to take the NHL’s scoring lead with 15 goals on the season.

Washington is hoping for the best for its captain, but admitted it was difficult to see him go down.

“Yeah that sucks. I mean hate to see it, he’s been absolutely on fire and he’s huge for our team," Nic Dowd said postgame. "He’s our captain, you gotta score goals to win games. He’s been playing incredible hockey. You hate to see it.”
