Alex Caruso joins NBA calls for justice for Breonna Taylor from Disney bubble

Alex Caruso answered questions on Wednesday about missing his sister’s wedding because of the NBA bubble.

He spent the rest of his availability over video conference advocating for justice for Breonna Taylor.

The Los Angeles Lakers guard joined other NBA players in using his makeshift podium time to call for consequences for the police shooting death of Taylor, a 26-year-old black woman who was killed in her Louisville home on March 13.

‘We need justice for Breonna Taylor’

“I’m just going to respond with, ‘We need justice for Breonna Taylor,’” Caruso said, per SI when asked about the upcoming playoffs. “That’s going to be my response to the rest of the questions if they’re basketball-related and not pertaining to me and my sister’s wedding.”

Caruso’s stance follows similar statements from other NBA players in the bubble, including Philadelphia 76ers forward Tobias Harris. On Monday, Harris called for Kentucky attorney general Daniel Cameron to arrest the officers involved in Taylor’s shooting death.

"We want to make sure that Daniel Cameron will arrest the cops and the officers involved with Breonna Taylor’s death, and that’s all I got to say,” Harris said before getting up and walking away.

Control from ‘inside the bubble’

Caruso’s messaging wasn’t quite as concise as Harris’. He didn’t stick to his vow of only responding with the call for justice. But he did continue to talk about Taylor and why he’s joined the calls.

Caruso said he didn’t hear about Taylor’s case until the aftermath of George Floyd’s homicide while in custody of the Minneapolis police. Some NBA players expressed wariness about restarting the season being a distraction from the social justice movement prompted by Floyd’s death, while others saw the platform as a chance to elevate the conversation.

Caruso is joining others in using that platform.

“This is one way we can control it from inside the bubble,” Caruso said. “It seems to be an important thing. It’s been four months since it happened that she was murdered in her sleep and nobody has been held accountable.”

How COVID-19 forced Caruso to miss wedding

Caruso also broke down how the bubble caused him to miss his sister’s Megan’s wedding in Austin, Texas, last week. He said the wedding was scheduled for July to accommodate him, with the date falling after any regularly scheduled playoff games.

Of course these games aren’t regularly scheduled, and Caruso was left with a difficult decision.

“They moved the whole wedding to July so that I could participate,” Caruso said. “Obviously, events happened, and the world was turned upside down.
