Alabama backup quarterback Mac Jones was arrested on DUI charges early Friday.
Jones, Alabama’s third-string quarterback, was also cited for having a fake ID. He’s 19 years old. The Tide play LSU on Saturday.
According to Tuscaloosa Police spokeswoman Lt. Teena Richardson, Jones, 19, was involved in a “minor traffic accident” at 2:14 am at the intersection of 10th Avenue and Paul Bryant Drive. Officers then realized Jones was intoxicated, and after a Field Sobriety test, he was charged with DUI. Officers also found a fake ID in Jones’ possession.
Alabama said Friday afternoon that Jones had been suspended.
“We are disappointed in Mac’s actions and this is obviously not the kind of behavior we expect from our players,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said in a statement. “Mac has been suspended from Saturday’s game against LSU. We will further evaluate what actions we need to take moving forward so we can correct the behavior. It is a privilege to represent The University of Alabama and there are certain responsibilities that go along with that privilege.”
Jones hasn’t played this year as he’s been behind Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa on the depth chart. A Jacksonville native, Jones was a four-star recruit and the No. 9 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2017. Tagovailoa is also a member of the class of 2017 while Hurts is officially a sophomore.
Defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand was not suspended for Alabama’s Week 1 game vs. Florida State after his July DUI arrest. But it’s important to note Hand was of age at the time of the incident and it didn’t happen during the season.
