AJ Pritchard has endorsed Phillip Schofield to be Strictly Come Dancing's first same-sex couple.

The professional dancer quit the show earlier this year but he reckons the This Morning presenter has what it takes to compete in the show and make history.

"I think Phillip Schofield would be great on Strictly. He got up on This Morning once with Holly and did a bit of a boogie and he can dance, and he is entertaining, and he is such a nice guy," he told The Sun.

"To see him learn and put him under a bit of pressure would always be funny, I’m sure.

"It would be great if he was part of the first same sex couple on Strictly – I would love to see that."

His comments come after Schofield, 58, came out as gay earlier this year.

While Strictly is yet to get a launch date for the upcoming series, it has recently been revealed that the line-up will soon be shared.

The programme is yet to have a same-sex celebrity and dancer pairing although the possibility has been much talked about, with the BBC stating they are "completely open" to the prospect.

Last year, the programme featured a highly praised same-sex routine between two of the show's professional dancers, Johannes Radebe and Graziano Di Prima.

Despite the dance being well-received it did also have its detractors as the BBC received almost 200 complaints.

Meanwhile, ITV's Dancing on Ice broke ground with the all-male partnership of Matt Evers and Ian 'H' Watkins earlier in 2020.
