I was surprised it made this much of a difference.

If you live your life chronically online like I do, then you might've come across the "hard water" discourse. Hard water, according to TikTok and its 201.7 million viewers, is apparently not good for you. I didn't really care about that, if I'm being honest.

Water laden with minerals and contaminants like chlorine, heavy metals and whatever else just seemed normal for me – I mean, it's water, what do you expect? Not to mention, New York City residents are extremely fortunate to benefit from some of the highest quality tap water in the country. But over the months, this conversation infiltrated my For You Page like crazy, and soon enough, I felt my subconscious becoming concerned with what I was showering with.

After hearing that contaminated water can have harmful effects on hair and skin's protective natural oils, can possibly cause irritation and potentially even contribute to hair loss — especially if you move abroad — that's when I took this seriously. It's also not just water sources that can cause the contamination; in older buildings, buildup and rust in pipes can impact the quality of the water in our showers.

When I came across Jolie's Filtered Shower Head through work via a PR pitch in my inbox, I figured I should give it a try, and the brand was kind enough to let me trial this bad boy first-hand. Retailing for $148, the shower head comes encased in a neat package that includes the device and the tools you need to install it, like tape and a wrench. The instructions were super straight-forward: Twist off your old shower head, add tape around the pipe, screw on Jolie. After I did this – in less than 10 minutes, might I add – I felt like a woman in STEM.

Now, I'm no water expert and at first, I didn't think I would notice anything too significant. But whoa, was I wrong.

I've been using the Jolie Shower Head for about a month now, and I solemnly swear I'm telling nothing but the truth, but within a week, I began to notice that my skin felt softer coming straight out of the shower than it ever has before. My skin, which is typically painfully dry and gets extremely ashy, seems to retain more hydration than it used to. This is a game-changer, as I like to lounge around on my phone for almost an hour before even thinking to slather on body lotion.

I also have curly hair which is naturally on the drier side, and like my skin, it's now a completely different beast: Frizz is less present, even before applying my usual post-wash product lineup, and I've found that my scalp doesn't flake like it once did. I also love how the water pressure from the shower head has remained just as powerful.

The only downside to this shower head is that it requires somewhat frequent filter changes, suggested for every three months (and each filter costs $33 if you opt for the quarterly shipping, a not insignificant — but worthwhile — investment.) Jolie also offers a warranty so that if you're not such a fan of the product, you can return it for free within 60 days.

Overall, I'd say I'm now a converted filtered shower head fan, and this product will come with me wherever I may move in the future.
