If we’ve learned anything, as social media comes of age, is that kids of a certain age sure do love ‘Space Jam.’

The 1996 film, co-starring Michael Jordan and a cast of Looney Toons characters, was a moderate success at the time considering the worldwide appeal of its leading lights. Far from a disappointment, but no blockbuster seemingly teemed with stills that would age well.

Alas, in the last several years a list of contributors too long to count has reminded us that the love they have for ‘Space Jam’ runs deep, resulting in a series of potential and/or almost-there reboots of the franchise. I mean, just look at what our Eric Freeman had to write yesterday in discussing Blake Griffin’s new ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ remake:

Los Angeles Clippers All-Star Blake Griffin has made no secret of his desire to appear in a sequel to “Space Jam.” The high-flying forward dabbles in the world of comedy, played Michael Jordan at a “Space Jam” script reading a few years ago, and faced off against the Monstars in a recent ad for Foot Locker. Yet no amount of pushing or support from Jordan himself appears likely to get Griffin in a starring role ahead of LeBron James. It’s just not going to happen.

There are FIVE LINKS in that quote, all from just our site, without even mentioning our obsession with the movie’s old website (when I wrote ‘awesome,’ I meant the website layout, not the film). I’m sure there have been others.

With this in mind, via The AV Club, the good people at Honest Trailers decided to give us the definitive ‘Space Jam’ preview. Just to remind us of what we’ re really dealing with, when it comes to this steaming pile of nostalgia:

SPOILER:

“The movie doesn’t even take place in space. It’s called ‘Space Jam.’”

I’m a bit older than the generation Adam Silver is hoping to cater the last two minutes of his games to, so my aversion to ‘Space Jam’ runs a little deeper than the recollection that I was 16 when the film was released, and the fact that there was no way in hell I was going to waste my time watching a damn cartoon when there was brooding to do.

It’s not a good cartoon. It’s not a good movie. Like a lot of things in the mid-1990s, it was weird, it had a mind-bending amount of clear-even-to-kids corporate interests, and it was there. And because it was merely there, it is somehow worth celebrating. Offending nothing but what should be every sensibility that you own, if you were born while Jimmy Carter was still president.

This has been your cheerful Wayback Wednesday.
