  • Jane Fonda walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival wearing a dramatic sequined black jumpsuit.

  • The actress said she doesn’t love dressing up for events and prefers to wear “comfortable” looks.

  • In attending the festival, Fonda accidentally went viral for her presentation of the Palme d'Or Award scroll—which she threw at the recipient when it was forgotten on-stage.

In the company of Hollywood’s glamorous Kate Winslet, Eva Longoria, and Andie MacDowell, Jane Fonda attended the 2023 Cannes Film Festival screening of Elemental, and her outfit didn’t disappoint. The actress, 85, stunned in a black sequined pantsuit that featured a dramatic train—a look that was equally fashionable, sophisticated, and comfortable.

The garment was designed by Ami Paris’ Alexandre Mattiussi. “Very happy to be back in Cannes wearing a custom look,” Fonda captioned a series of photos in which she modeled the outfit seemingly in front of a hotel room’s balcony. Fans and followers adored the chic ensemble.

“Beautiful and strong!!!! Xoxo,” Denise Austin commented on the Instagram post. “I want to be Jane Fonda when I am almost 86!” a fan added. “😍😍😍😍😍😍 you’re a legend, Jane!!” someone else wrote.

In another post, Fonda shared the breathtaking view from her hotel room, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to attend the festival. “I’m here as a brand Ambassador for L’Oreal which I find quite amazing at my age,” she wrote.

While many of her peers stepped out in complex gowns and high heels, Fonda opted to keep it simple and classic. In an interview with The Telegraph, she admitted that she’s not a fan of dressing up for events.

“I don’t like dressing up for anything. It’s not particular to Cannes,” she explained. “I like to be comfortable and what you have to put on to walk the red carpet usually isn’t very comfortable. Your feet hurt. Your back hurts. You’ve got a lot of Spanx pulling you in. When you get older, you can’t wear high heels anymore—you can fall over in them.”

Instead, she opted for pointed-toe flats, and of course, she rocked her now-signature platinum gray hair, a natural hue she said she doesn’t regret “for one second.” (The Grace and Frankie star debuted the switch from her decades-long golden blonde at the 2020 Oscars.)

While at the festival, Fonda also accidentally went viral with a clip in which she presented the Palme d'Or Award scroll to French director Justine Triet for her film Anatomy of a Fall. When Triet forgot the scroll on stage, Fonda reflexively tossed it toward the director’s back as she walked away. Triet still didn’t acknowledge her, so Fonda threw her hands up in laughter.

The clip was repeatedly shared on social media, and one Twitter user’s take echoed most: “Jane Fonda has officially stopped giving f*cks,” they wrote.

We’d venture to say she only gives them where it counts. And that’s exactly why we love her.

We also love how open she is about her beauty routine. Unsurprisingly, as the star attended Cannes Film Festival as a L’Oreal ambassador, her beauty routine is full of the brand’s products. Check out some of the 85-year-old’s skincare essentials below.
