While ongoing inflation and regional banking failures have rattled some parts of the U.S. economy, Pennsylvania’s workforce appears to be stable as 2023 begins.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry’s January unemployment report, released March 10, the state’s unemployment rate sits at 4.3% — unchanged from December’s figure. The education and health services sector posted the largest gain with approximately 8,000 new jobs from December to January, the agency said.

A job through the commonwealth could offer steady pay and strong benefits for those who are willing to enter the public sector. Here’s a look at eight of the highest-paying jobs currently open and advertised publicly through the commonwealth’s online portal, as of mid-March.

Chief information officer

Salary: $215,000 to $235,000

Agency: Pennsylvania Office of Administration

Description: “The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking a strategic and innovative technology leader to serve as the state’s Chief Information Officer (CIO),” the online job posting reads. ”The CIO’s core mission is to develop and implement a technology vision for the state, to maintain and oversee the state’s technical and security architecture, and to enable the delivery of modern technology that makes government services simple and easy to use. The CIO is a critical member of the governor’s executive leadership team and will support all commonwealth agencies under the governor’s jurisdiction, and its 78,000 employees, and the residents of Pennsylvania.”

The position seeks to lead efforts to manage Pennsylvania’s IT services and advise commonwealth leaders on technological issues, among other duties. Qualified candidates are expected to have at least eight years of experience managing IT services “in large private or public-sector organizations.”

This position is based in Dauphin County.

Staff physicians

Salary: $157,380 to $197,517

Agency: Department of Human Services

Description: Danville State Hospital in Montour County is seeking a staff physician to provide medical services for its patients, including physical and neurological examinations, diagnoses and subsequent care, the job description reads.

Pennsylvania’s residency requirement is currently waived for the position, according to the online posting.

Dentist openings

Several dental positions are open throughout Pennsylvania’s Department of Corrections. We’ve compiled them below.

Salary: $128,274 to $174,358

Agency: Department of Corrections

Description: The commonwealth is searching for a handful of dentists to work with inmates and oversee dental operations at several state correctional facilities.

“As a Dentist... you will be responsible for supervising the work of the dental staff on a daily basis. You will be responsible for all aspects of the clinical services provided to the inmate population by DOC dental clinic staff,” their job descriptions read.

Positions are open at correctional facilities in Clearfield, Forest, Greene, Huntingdon and Schuylkill counties.

Director of Bureau of Revenue, Cash Flow and Debt

Salary: $119,785 to $163,091

Agency: Pennsylvania Office of the Budget

Description: Pennsylvania Bureau of Redevelopment, Capital and Debt is searching for its next director of the Bureau of Revenue, Cash Flow and Debt, housed within the commonwealth’s Office of the Budget. The position would focus on developing and maintaining Pennsylvania’s banking regulations and debt payments and advising state officials, among other responsibilities.

“The employee in this class directs the development and evaluation of revenue estimates, the preparation of cash flow estimates for capital funds and the General Fund, the establishment of major payment schedules for operating funds, the analysis and preparation of legislation concerning debt and bond issues, the analysis of the municipal bond market, the preparation of debt issue schedules and the development and preparation of all materials relevant to bond issues and tax anticipation notes,” the job description reads. “Significant aspects of the work include the recommendation of the timing and sizing of all general obligation bond sales and the coordination of bond issue documents, including the official statement for the issue, in conformance with all laws, regulations and standards.”

Part-time remote work is possible, though a successful candidate will be expected to commute to the agency’s office in Harrisburg.

Public health toxicologist

Salary: $104,998 to $159,551

Agency: Department of Health

Description: As a public health toxicologist within the Bureau of Epidemiology’s Division of Environmental Health, a candidate in this role will evaluate toxicological information related to chemical exposures and help disseminate information to the public and other stakeholders, all in an effort to minimize adverse health effects.

“You will provide guidance and support to the division staff in the collection and analysis of data on environmental exposure and health outcome and dissemination of information pertaining to the health effects of toxicological and environmental hazards to protect public health,” the job description reads. “You will develop policies and procedures for coordinating resources during toxic environmental emergencies and assists with the conduct of follow-up epidemiological studies/ investigations to prevent/mitigate adverse health effects to the public.”

This position requires at least three years of post-doctoral experience in toxicology or pharmacology, plus a doctoral degree in toxicology or a closely related field. Special requirements include board certification in general toxicology from the American Board of Toxicology (or an equivalent international certifying board) within six months of hire.

While this position is based in Harrisburg, a successful candidate could work from home part-time up to three days each week.

Epidemiologist

Salary: $92,030 to $139,815

Description: Pennsylvania’s Department of Health is searching for a qualified candidate to fill its viral hepatitis coordinator/epidemiologist position within the Division of Infectious Disease Epidemiology.

Description: Though several nurse manager positions are open through the commonwealth, this posting seeks a candidate who will serve as the director of health care services for a youth center in one of two locations in Pennsylvania.

This position will be located at the Loysville Youth Development Center in Loysville (Perry County) or North Central Secure Treatment Unit in Danville (Montour County). A successful candidate “plans, organizes and manages the development, organization, implementation and evaluation of health care and health-related services” for one of the two centers, which are housed within the commonwealth’s Bureau of Juvenile Justice Services.

Though the position’s headquarters will be located in either Perry County or Montour County, the job will require travel between Bureau of Juvenile Justice Services facilities, including some in Perry, Huntingdon, Luzerne, Franklin, Montour and Dauphin counties.
