– Expect to hear a lot about Indiana coach Kevin Wilson’s resignation. The school parted ways with Wilson despite a second-straight bowl appearance because of what athletic director Fred Glass said were “philosophical differences.” Numerous former Indiana players talked about how they felt they were mistreated when injured or recovering from injuries.

The school appointed defensive coordinator Tom Allen to be Wilson’s permanent replacement. Allen’s quarterback, Richard Lagow, wears No. 21, one of the few quarterbacks to wear a number above 19. Lagow, a junior-college transfer, has thrown for 3,174 yards this year with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

– Utah has a huge edge running the football. The Utes are led by running back Joe Williams, who has 1,185 yards and nine touchdowns on just 184 carries. As a team, the Utes average nearly five yards a carry and have 24 total touchdowns.

Indiana isn’t nearly as proficient. The Hoosiers average less than four yards a carry and leading rusher Devine Redding has 236 carries for 1,050 yards and six touchdowns. And while Utah QB Troy Williams can be a rushing threat (five TDs), Lagow definitely isn’t. When you take sacks into account, he has minus-171 yards rushing.

– Remember when Ohio State coach Urban Meyer complimented Indiana’s defense? While Wilson was an offensive-minded coach, the improvement of the Indiana defense is a big reason why Allen, in his first year as the team’s coordinator, got the head coaching gig. The Hoosiers rank No. 41 in total defense and give up 5.0 yards a play.

The per-play statistics are much better than Utah’s defense, which has given up 5.67 yards a play this year. But we’re also fully aware that the offenses in the Pac-12 are a bit more explosive than the offenses in the Big Ten.
