An early morning house fire in a northwest Calgary neighbourhood has left three homes damaged and several people displaced.

Just before 2 a.m. on Sunday, the Calgary Fire Department recieved multiple calls regarding a blaze in the 100 block of Evansbrooke Way NW. 

Flames could be seen from a distance away, Calgary Fire said in a statement.

"Damage to the source home is extensive, with significant damage to a neighbouring house," the statement read.

"At its [the fire's] peak, there were 17 fire apparatus on scene, with 41 firefighters."

The fire also damaged another neighbouring house and left 11 people and three dogs displaced.

One person who was in a burning house suffered second degree burns while evacuating. They were treated and taken to hospital by EMS.

"My wife and my 2-year-old daughter, she was sleeping in the other room and they saw a fire," said Ankit Nagpal who lives next-door to one of the impacted houses.

"My wife, she's still in trauma."

Fire investigators remained on-scene throughout the morning to make sure all hot spots were extinguished. They were also trying to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

In a statement, Calgary Fire said that all Calgarians should plan at least two different escape routes out of their homes in case of a fire.
