2015 NHL Trade Tracker: Deal-by-deal details & analysis
Here’s a list of the deals made before the NHL's trade deadline on Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m. ET, with trade-by-trade analysis on deadine-day deals by Yahoo Sports NHL writer Nick Cotsonika.
ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: The Ducks get defensive depth in Holzer, a big body who might be more in his element in the physical Western Conference. The Leafs take on 35-year-old Brewer, who's in the last year of a 4-year-deal, and collect a draft pick for the future.

ANALYSIS: Ducks GM Bob Murray has wanted to remake his defense all season. He still doesn’t have an elite 'D' corps, but he has a better one with Wisniewski. The Blue Jackets wanted to move Wisniewski and his contract, with two more seasons at a $5.5 million cap hit. Wisniewski didn’t want to leave Columbus and had a partial no-trade clause, but Anaheim was on his approved list. The Blackhawks traded him to the Ducks at the deadline in 2009 and he spent 2009-10 with them, too. The Jackets take back Bourque, and they get prospect William Karlsson and a second-rounder.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: Talbot brings veteran grit and penalty killing. The 31-year-old has played 84 playoff games. He had eight goals in 24 games when the Penguins won the Cup in 2009, scoring twice in a 2-1 victory in Game 7 of the final. Caron is only 24, and the Bruins drafted him 25th overall in 2009. But he had zero points in 11 games this season. The Avs are banking on his upside.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: The Flames drafted Baertschi 13th overall in 2011. He’s skilled and still has potential at age 22, but he has been playing in the minors. He had zero goals and four points in 15 games for Calgary and eight goals and 25 points in 36 games for AHL Adirondack this season. He needed a change of scenery.

ANALYSIS: This is a little puzzling, but a win-now move for the Penguins. Lovejoy, 31, began his career as an undrafted free agent in Pittsburgh. He made great strides last season in Anaheim, playing a top-pair role. He has taken a step back this season, but he won’t be on the top pair now that he’s back with the Penguins. He has one year left on his contract at a $1.1 million hit. Despres was a first-round pick in 2009, and he’s younger at 23, and he has 6-foot-4 size and skill. He has a year left at $900,000 and will be a restricted free agent, not a UFA. But he takes too many penalties and hasn’t earned enough trust with the coaches apparently.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: When motivated, Stewart can be an impact power forward. He can score. He can hit. The problem over his career has been consistency. The Wild obviously hope he will be motivated playing for a team with a shot at the playoffs and playing for a contract as a pending unrestricted free agent. The Sabres had to eat half of his salary for the rest of the season, but they got a second-round pick, not a bad return considering the deal was done so late.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: More depth and more speed for Montreal. More assets for Buffalo. Mitchell, 30, a pending unrestricted free agent, has played 60 playoff games in the NHL. He has only three goals and 12 points in those games, but part of his value is penalty killing. The Habs already rank third in the NHL..

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: Jokinen was not happy when the Predators traded him to the Leafs, and it was not hard to understand why. He had appeared in the playoffs only once in his previous 16 NHL seasons, and he went from one of the best teams in the league to one of the worst. But his Toronto tenure lasted only six games, as the Leafs flipped him to the Blues for a draft pick. He gives the Blues depth and maybe intel on a Central Division rival. The Leafs get a journeyman in Lindstrom and another draft pick for their rebuild.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: Leopold has bounced from the Blues to the Blue Jackets to the Wild, but the 34-year-old pending unrestricted free agent is going back to his home state and will provide some veteran leadership and depth. The Blue Jackets trade an expiring contract for Falk, a 26-year-old who is 6-foot-5 and 215 pounds, and a draft pick. Fault is a pending restricted free agent.
(Trade completed March 2, 2015.)
ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: This is more of a minor-league deal, and the centerpiece is Conacher, who got off to a great start in the NHL with nine goals and 24 points in 35 games for Tampa Bay – and then bounced to Ottawa to Buffalo to the Islanders to the minors. He has 22 points in 28 games for AHL Bridgeport.
(Trade completed March 2, 2015.)
ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: The Islanders addressed their weakness in goal by acquiring Jaroslav Halak and signing Johnson in the off-season. Now they have addressed it again by acquiring Neuvirth, an upgrade over Johnson. He has played nine NHL playoff games. Johnson? Zero. Neuvirth is a pending unrestricted free agent. Johnson has one year left on his contract. So the Sabres got some assets for an expiring contract – and helped their chances at the first overall pick.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: Cole, 26, was a first-round pick in 2007. He’s a pending restricted free agent with a $900,000 salary-cap hit. Bortuzzo, 25, was a third-round pick in 2007. He’s a pending RFA with a $650,000 hit. The Blues wanted to improve the right side of their defense. Cole, a left shot, was playing on the right. The Penguins get a player with more offensive upside.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: A swap of fringe players. Stollery, 27, is a 5-foot-11 defenseman who was never drafted and has seven games of NHL experience. Hamilton, 23, is a 6-foot-1 centerman who was drafted in the fifth round in 2010 and has 12 games of NHL experience.
(Trade completed March 2, 2015.)
ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: The Islanders added to their bottom six. The Sharks got an asset for a pending unrestricted free agent. Kennedy, 28, has 12 goals and 27 points in 76 playoff games – all with Pittsburgh. If the Isles meet the Pens in the playoffs, here is yet another storyline.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: The Red Wings were looking for a right-shot, puck-moving defenseman, but they didn’t want to overpay, especially with their power play ranked first in the NHL. Zidlicky was a relative bargain. He’s 38 years old and not what he once was, but his skills and smarts should fit into Detroit’s system. He waived his no-trade clause. He’s a pending unrestricted free agent.
(Trade completed March 2, 2015.)
ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: A swap of similar players. Smith, 26, has five goals and nine points in 61 games for the Blackhawks this season. Desjardins, 28, who wasn’t drafted, has five goals and eight points in 56 games for the Sharks. Both kill penalties. But Smith is signed through next season at a $1.5 million cap hit, while Desjardins is a pending unrestricted free agent. Smith shakes up the Sharks’ bottom six, while the Blackhawks gain a little roster and cap flexibility.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: If healthy, Michalek is a good defensive defenseman – a shot-blocker, a penalty-killer, a good fit for the structured Blues. The problem is, he has been out with a concussion and so his outlook is uncertain. He told Sportsnet he has been feeling better and exercising over the last few days, but he hasn’t started skating yet.

ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: Montreal GM Marc Bergevin added depth up front and penalty killing for a low price. Flynn, 26, is a pending restricted free agent with a $625,000 cap hit. He has five goals and 17 points in 54 games for the Sabres this season, averaging 2:00 on the PK.
(Trade completed March 2, 2015.)
ACQUIRED | ACQUIRED |
ANALYSIS: Habs GM Marc Bergevin added to his blue line at a reasonable price in this market. But there is a reason for that: Petry wasn’t the most valuable option out there. Oilers GM Craig MacTavish was trying to get more but couldn’t convince other GMs to bid higher. Petry, a pending unrestricted free agent, is considered average. We’ll see whether he was weighed down by playing on a bad team and will look better on a good team. It’s a great opportunity to increase his value heading into free agency.
