Marilyn Monroe's exposed shoulders got this teen a dress code violation. Confused? So was her mom.

A middle school parent in South Ogden, Utah, is disappointed that her daughter’s school gave the teen a dress code violation when, it turns out, there wasn’t any infraction at all.

On Tuesday, a 13-year-old student at South Ogden Junior High School wore a sweatshirt with one of her favorite actresses, Marilyn Monroe, pictured on it, alongside legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. And although the student’s outfit was completely in line with the school’s standards, an administrator apparently took offense at what Monroe was wearing in the image.

The girl’s mother, Katie Fabert, spoke with Fox 13 and expressed her confusion over the issue, explaining that she had to go directly to the vice principal who issued the citation after her daughter said she didn’t know why she was forced to change.

“I said, ‘Is this not in dress code?’ And he said, ‘No, it’s not,'” Fabert recalled, because of Monroe’s exposed shoulders.

“He just said that if Marilyn Monroe on the shirt isn’t in South’s dress code, then the shirt isn’t in South’s dress code,” Fabert said, before explaining that the conversation eventually became confrontational.” The vice principal “just got kind of in [my daughter’s] face, and I just kind of looked over at her, and she just looked like she was on the verge of tears,” she said.

Eventually, the mother and daughter went home and later received a phone call from the principal, who clarified that the alleged violation wasn’t legitimate.

“Instead of enforcing what is actually dress code, these teachers are coming in and bringing their own opinion,” Fabert said.

She didn’t immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for further comment. However, a spokesperson from the Weber School District sent the following statement.

“On Tuesday, November 7, 2018, we had an issue at South Ogden Junior High School with a student wearing a shirt that an employee thought was in a violation of the dress code. The student was asked to wear something different. The principal has reviewed that decision and determined the attire was not in violation of the school’s dress code. We will be working closely with the student, the student’s family and our staff to appropriately resolve the matter.”
