Top 5 NBA Point Guards for 2012: NBA Fan’s Opinion

2012 NBA point guards

In the aftermath of the lockout, the balance of power in the NBA shifted when the Los Angeles Clippers acquired point guard Chris Paul. Immediately, the Clippers became serious NBA Playoff contenders for 2012. However, Paul is not the only NBA point guard with big dreams and lofty expectations for 2012. Take a closer look at the top five NBA point guards for 2012.

5. Rajon Rondo: Boston Celtics

Many NBA fans would be surprised to learn that point guard Rajon Rondo averaged 11.2 assists per game last year. With NBA talent such as Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce on the floor, the Celtics point guard should tally lots of assists again in 2012. It remains to be seen how trade rumors impact Rondo's play at point guard in 2012.

4. Deron Williams: New Jersey Nets

Last year, Deron Williams averaged over 20 points and 10 assists per game at point guard. With emerging center Brook Lopez playing for the Nets, Williams should have no trouble posting double-digit assist numbers at point guard again in 2012. Of course, his NBA numbers would improve even more in 2012 if the Nets acquire Dwight Howard.

3. Russell Westbrook: Oklahoma City Thunder

As an NBA fan, I thought the criticism of Russell Westbrook in last year's playoffs was ridiculous. The fact that Westbrook is a dual threat NBA point guard is a major advantage when opposing defenses try to match up against the Thunder. In 2012, Westbrook could be the starting point guard of the best team in the NBA.

2. Derrick Rose: Chicago Bulls

The Bulls were the NBA's surprise team last year. So it came as no surprise that their point guard, Derrick Rose, was the MVP. However, Rose is a competitor and he will be looking to advance deeper in the 2012 NBA Playoffs. Rose will be hard-pressed to improve upon his 25.0 points and 7.7 assists per game averages at point guard in 2012.

1. Chris Paul: Los Angeles Clippers

I live in New Orleans and I am a huge Hornets fan. So I have seen the best point guard in the NBA in person for many years prior to 2012. Chris Paul's leadership, passing ability and defense at point guard will make the Clippers instant contenders in the NBA in 2012. Chris Paul will be the best point guard in the NBA once again in 2012.

Honorable mention 2012 NBA point guards

Jrue Holiday: Philadelphia 76ers, Jason Kidd: Dallas Mavericks, Kyle Lowry: Houston Rockets, Steve Nash: Phoenix Suns, John Wall: Washington Wizards

Patrick Michael was born in New Orleans and currently resides in the Big Easy. A loyal New Orleans NBA fan, Patrick was a diehard New Orleans Jazz fan and now cheers for the Hornets. Patrick was in the New Orleans Arena the night the Hornets were one win away from the Western Conference Finals.
