Player Notes
Joe Mauer (quad) remained out of the Twins' lineup Thursday.

Advice: He hasn't started a game since Sunday as he battles a nagging right quad ailment. Mauer will likely continue to serve mainly as a pinch-hitter in the final days of the season.

Joe Mauer (quad) will be available to hit off the bench when the Twins face the Royals on Wednesday.

Advice: While Mauer could see an at-bat in Wednesday's contest, he is not in the lineup proper. Kennys Vargas draws the start at first instead and is hitting fifth. Mauer has been dealing with a right quad injury for well over a month. He has played in just 12 games in September.

Joe Mauer (quad) admitted Saturday that he's "been feeling terrible for a while."

Advice: Mauer has battled lingering pain in his right quad area for the last six weeks and has been in and out of the lineup of late. "Well, I feel terrible," Mauer said. "I’ve been feeling terrible for a while. But the season’s not over." The first baseman will be back in the lineup Sunday, but his playing time in the final week figures to continue to be curtailed.

Joe Mauer might not start again until Sunday due to ongoing soreness in his right quad.

Advice: Mauer hasn't started since last Saturday, although he had been slated to play Wednesday before that game was rained out. After a terrific August, Mauer has fallen off to .119/.245/.238 in September. Kennys Vargas has been filling in at first base.

Joe Mauer is out of the Twins' starting lineup for Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader versus Detroit.

Advice: Kennys Vargas will start at first base and bat fifth against Tigers right-hander Anibal Sanchez. Twins manager Paul Molitor said he has noticed some "off-balance" swings from Mauer this week and might also sit him against Justin Verlander in the nightcap Thursday.
