    North Carolina congressional candidate suspends campaign days before primary runoff

    A candidate seeking the Republican nomination for a North Carolina congressional seat announced Thursday that she's suspending her campaign, citing her rival's endorsement by former President Donald Trump in their upcoming runoff. Johnston County attorney Kelly Daughtry had finished first among 14 candidates in the March 5 Republican primary for the central North Carolina district. In a social media post, Daughtry said that with Trump's formal backing of Knott last month “it has become clear that a pathway to victory is no longer feasible."

    Alabama court authorizes second nitrogen execution

    Alabama has authorized the execution of a second inmate by nitrogen gas, months after the state became the first state to put a person to death with the previously untested method. The Alabama Supreme Court on Thursday granted the state attorney general's request for an execution date for Alan Eugene Miller, who survived a 2022 lethal injection attempt. The state's governor will set the exact date of the execution for Miller, who was convicted of killing three men during a 1999 workplace shooting.

    Mouncastle and Mateo propel Orioles to 7-2 win over Yankees in series clincher

    Ryan Mountcastle and Jorge Mateo each homered and drove in two runs to lift the Baltimore Orioles to a series-deciding 7-2 victory over the New York Yankees on Thursday. Ryan McKenna also connected and Jordan Westburg’s two-run triple helped the Orioles complete a four-run fifth to chase Yankees starter Carlos Rodon (2-2) and secure a third win of the four-game set, the first this season between likely AL East contenders. Righty Kyle Bradish allowed one run in 4 2/3 innings in his first start after beginning the season on the 15-day injured list with a UCL strain.
