Next Match: away to Valencia, December 22
Europe: UEFA Champions League (Round of 16)
President Florentino Perez has flatly denied that Real Madrid's signing of Gareth Bale was funded by the beleaguered Spanish bank Bankia, as a Belgian member of the European Parliament has claimed. He told reporters: "We haven't spoken with any financial entity, I have said it countless times, but it doesn't seem to count. The signing of Gareth Bale was not paid for by Bankia, we paid for it with our own resources. Our report (on the signing) has been made public and all our members have seen it." And in response to the announcement that the European Commission has opened an investigation into seven Spanish clubs over illegal state help, including Real Madrid, Perez said that "a campaign against Spanish football" was being waged from Europe. Carlo Ancelotti is now free to name Sergio Ramos in his squad for the match at Valencia on Sunday after the first yellow card the defender received against Osasuna - which lead to him being sent off later in the game - was rescinded.
