Dak Prescott 'fearful to have children' after Uvalde elementary school shooting

Dak Prescott isn’t a father.

Tuesday’s horrific mass shooting at a Texas elementary school, however, left the Dallas Cowboys quarterback scared to even become a parent, let alone send his kids off to school one day.

“Honestly, it makes me fearful to have children,” Prescott said Wednesday after practice, via USA Today. “And that’s not right. That’s sad. …. I don’t care if you’re an athlete or not. We’re talking about children. We’re talking about the future. I mean, I don’t have kids and can’t imagine having to send my kid to school with that anxiety.”

Prescott is far from alone. The sports world, like the rest of the country, was reeling on Tuesday after the shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

An 18-year-old gunman killed at least 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde — which sits about 90 minutes west of San Antonio — according to The New York Times. The shooting was the deadliest at a school in the United States since the Sandy Hook massacre in Connecticut nearly a decade ago.

The shooting was just the latest in the United States in recent days, and was the 15th mass shooting in the country since 10 people were killed at a Buffalo grocery store 10 days earlier. According to the Gun Violence Archive, that’s an average of 1.5 mass shootings per day.

Many of the victims in Uvalde were fourth grade students, which is the same grade that Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy’s daughter is currently finishing. McCarthy, understandably, was extremely emotional when talking about the shooting on Wednesday.

“We’ve got to be better,” McCarthy said, via USA Today. “There has to be a better way. We know there’s a better way. And we need to do the things to make it better. To not protect the future of our community is tragic. It makes me sick like I’m sure it does everybody."
