Coronavirus: Lewis Hamilton isolating and has 'zero symptoms' after he was at event with Idris Elba and Sophie Trudeau

Six-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton said he’s been social distancing after he was at an event with actor Idris Elba and Sophie Trudeau, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Both Elba and Sophie Trudeau have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus. Hamilton said he feels fine and is not going to take a test because of the widespread testing shortage. He tweeted Saturday morning that it had been 17 days since he last saw Elba and Trudeau and was in touch with the actor.

“Hey guys, I hope you’re all staying positive and keeping busy and healthy,” Hamilton wrote. “There’s been some speculation about my health after I was at an event where two people later tested positive for coronavirus.”

“I wanted to let you know that I’m doing well, feeling healthy and working out twice a day. I have zero symptoms and it’s now been 17 days since I saw Sophie and Idris. I have been in touch with Idris and happy to hear he is OK. I did speak to my doctor and double checked if I needed to take a test but the truth is, there is a limited amount of tests available and there are people who need it more than I do, especially when I wasn’t showing symptoms at all. So what I’ve done is keep myself isolated this past week, actually since practice was cancelled last Friday and kept my distance from people.”

Hamilton was at a WE Movement event on March 3 with both Elba and Trudeau ahead of the scheduled Australian Grand Prix on March 15. The season-opening Formula 1 race was canceled just before it was scheduled to begin after a member of the McLaren team tested positive for coronavirus. McLaren had said it was pulling out of the race before the cancellation out of an abundance of caution because of how contagious the virus is.

Formula 1 has postponed or canceled all races through the end of May because of the coronavirus outbreak. The earliest the F1 season will begin is at Azerbaijan on June 7. F1 teams have agreed to ditch the traditional summer break this year with the hope of making up some races in August because of the long layoff.

Hamilton, 35, is the reigning Formula 1 champion. The Mercedes driver has won five of the last six championships and has never finished lower than fifth in the points standings throughout his entire career.
