Wimbledon prize money has fallen nearly $300K due to Brexit

This year’s Wimbledon champions will receive a record £2 million in prize money, but the value of that award has already taken a substantial hit thanks to the Brexit.

The UK’s vote to leave the European Union sent the British pound plummeting nearly 10 percent Friday.

Thursday afternoon, the winner's haul was worth just over $3 million. One day later, the award depreciated over $275,000 due to the stock-market panic.

Though Wimbledon increased its prize from £1.89 million to £2 million, the winners of the 2016 edition currently stand to take home close to $60,000 less than last year’s champions.

While the total might not matter much to high-earning stars like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Serena Williams, the drop will have a greater effect on the low-ranking players.

It already took a hit on players in the tournament’s qualifying round, who lost $1,800 overnight after a rain delay pushed matches from Thursday to Friday.
