Defending champion Andy Murray shocked by Stanislas Wawrinka at the U.S. Open

It appears 2013 is going to go down as the U.S. Open that doesn't want to give us the matchups we had hoped for as Andy Murray failed to advance to the semifinals, dashing the hopes of a potential monster meeting with Novak Djokovic.

Murray got beat in straight sets to Stanislas Wawrinka, the biggest upset of the tournament so far as Wawrinka advances to his first ever Grand Slam semifinal.

It was a pretty one-sided affair for Wawrinka, who didn't face a single break point from Murray and cruised fairly easy 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

What happened to the defending champion who was going for his third Grand Slam win in the last full year after his triumph at Wimbledon? Maybe a little bit of a hangover from his win in his home country.

Murray hit just 15 winners to his 30 unforced errors, and this was after dropping an opening set to Leonardo Mayer in the fourth round. His game wasn't sharp from the beginning of the tournament, and while most thought it was a layup for Murray to make this semifinal, his game just wasn't there.

Murray's quarterfinal exit is the first time he hasn't made a Grand Slam final when he entered the tournament since the 2012 French Open, ending his run as one of the hottest players in the world considering his play the last two years.

Who is the most happy about this result? While a lot would think Wawrinka, it has to be Djokovic, who now can avoid that scary Murray-Rafael Nadal one-two punch to win this U.S. Open.

Djokovic would have faced a tough opponent, and a man that beat him on this surface a year ago in the finals, but now gets the chance to take out Mikhail Youzhny and then Wawrinka before he faces up against Nadal.
