Arjen Robben isn't a fan of 'circus' tricks like Douglas Costa's heel flick

Douglas Costa's slick heel flick during Bayern Munich's 3-0 Bundesliga victory over Bayer Leverkusen created quite the buzz on Saturday. It was one of the must-see highlights, so much so that the Brazilian was celebrated on social media for embarrassing 20-year-old midfielder Julian Brandt.

Fans absolutely love it when talented players like Costa show off their skills. But Leverkusen certainly didn't appreciate the showboating. Somewhat surprisingly, neither did one of Costa's teammates.

Arjen Robben, Costa's opposite wing in Bayern's lethal attack, told Sky Sports that the 24-year-old Costa should tone down his act.

"I'd be careful," Robben said of Costa, who's in his first season with Bayern after a $33 million summer transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk. "It looks good, the spectators clap, everything is wonderful and he does it very, very well."

"But one shouldn't forget the score was 3-0 at the time and you need to respect the opposition. That was a bit dubious, I think. It belongs in the circus."

Robben, now 31 and one of Bayern's elder statesmen, has every right to make sure his younger teammates play the right way. However, it's interesting that this opinion is coming from Robben.

Throughout his career, Robben has been dogged by criticism over his penchant for diving. Such antics marred his three seasons at Chelsea from 2004 to 2007 and infuriated Premier League opponents. (Jose Mourinho later admitted that his ex-player tries to win penalties).

So what's more unsportsmanlike: Rainbow flicks or flops in the box?

Costa did more than tricks in Saturday's rout. He set up the first of Thomas Mueller's two goals by shedding his marker to deliver a pinpoint cross into the box.
