World Cup Match Report: Holland beats Chile 2-0, wins Group B

Both the Netherlands and Chile were already through to the knockout round of the World Cup before Monday’s final match of the group stage. The Dutch blanked Chile 2-0 and won Group B, thanks to goals from Leroy Fer and Memphis Depay.

There wasn’t much excitement early in the match with both sides knowing they were through. Holland and Chile combined for a grand total of zero shots on goal in the first half, but things perked up in the final 45 minutes as the Dutch finally broke through.

Leroy Fer was subbed on in the 75th minute and 90 seconds later he opened the scoring with his first international tally for the Netherlands. Taking a pass off a corner kick, Daryl Janmaat played a perfect cross into the Chilean box where Fer headed it home for the 1-0 lead.

In extra time, while streaking down the left side, Arjen Robben sent a ball into the box where Memphis Depay poked it in for the second goal to ensure a Dutch victory.

What's Next

Chile will play on Saturday against the winner of Group A, which will either be Brazil, Croatia or Mexico. Holland get an extra day’s rest and will meet Group A’s second place team on Sunday. One note for Chile: In the last two World Cups they’ve participated in (1998 and 2010), they’ve been eliminated by Brazil both times.
