Marital drama leads to spurned handshake and a volatile Sampdoria-Inter match

Maxi Lopez and Mauro Icardi were friends and teammates at Sampdoria last season. Then Lopez's wife, model Wanda Nara, had an affair with Icardi which has turned into a new relationship now that her marriage has ended. Icardi moved to Inter this season and though Lopez said the situation hurt him a great deal, he didn't hold a grudge, saying "at the end of the day nobody died."

But then Icardi started sharing happy pictures of himself with Nara, who is now his fiance, and Lopez's children on social media. That made Lopez reconsider his position. "I can understand that, being a public figure, he publishes photos. But I`m not comfortable with my kids being in those photos," he told Sky Italia in the build-up to facing Icardi on the pitch. And after having a few more days to stew over this, Lopez decided not to shake Icardi's hand before the match between Sampdoria and Inter (now known as the Derby della Wanda), leaving his fellow Argentine hanging.

This was only the beginning.

A mere 13 minutes into the match, Icardi opened the scoring and celebrated by holding his hand to his ear in front his old club's fans to earn himself a yellow card.

Five minutes later, Maxi Lopez took the chance to get his revenge from the penalty spot, but his shot was saved. Suddenly his personal life was being paralleled on the pitch.

The two players' teammates took sides and scuffles broke out as tempers threatened to boil over.

Icardi went on to score again in the 63rd minute and Inter won 4-0, giving Icardi the chance to party at Lopez's house — something that he is starting to make a habit of.
