David Moyes taking a ball to the gut sums up Man United's loss to Bayern

David Moyes taking a ball to the gut sums up Man United's loss to Bayern

For a split second, Manchester United gave Bayern Munich a scare when Patrice Evra scored the first goal of their Champions League quarterfinal second leg. It gave Man United an improbable 2-1 lead on aggregate and, for a moment, allowed David Moyes to feel like a new man. One who wasn't always the butt of jokes and the subject of derogatory plane banners.

But then, moments later, Mario Mandzukic equalized for Bayern. And nine minutes after that, Thomas Muller added another and finally, Arjen Robben made it 3-1 Bayern in the 76th minute to complete the expected result.

To Man United's credit, they made the first 147 minutes of this tie difficult for the European champions. But in the end, it almost would have been better if they were out of it from the start instead of being given false hope and having it snatched away. The whole thing proved to be nothing more than a deflected clearance attempt from Chris Smalling that smacked Moyes square in the gut — a thing that literally happened in the 33rd minute.

Just keep watching that video repeat and you'll have an idea of what it's like to be David Moyes in the year 2014.
