ABC has acquired Men in Shorts — a comedy based on the life of LA Galaxy midfielder Robbie Rogers, who was the first openly gay man to play in a major U.S. sports league. Written by Claudia Lonow (How to Live with Your Parents) and Jordon Nardino (Desperate Housewives, Smash), the show is about a young professional footballer who comes out of the closet. Rogers is attached as a producer. We can only hope that Landon Donovan decided to retire at the end of this season so he can play himself in the show.

From Deadline.com:

Men In Shorts will combine elements of a family and workplace comedy. “To me, a sports team locker room is a workplace we haven’t seen before,” [Lonow] said. Like in real-life, the protagonist comes from a conservative family. The project naturally takes liberties — on the show, the guy’s parents are still together, and, while Rogers’ father had been completely supportive and accepting, the soccer dad on the series “has more of a journey to go,” Lonow said. The comedy will chronicle how the soccer player’s teammates and friends interact with him after his coming out and how they start evaluating their own secrets that are keeping them from “being happier and more authentic.”

Rogers came out as gay in February 2013 and put his playing career on hold upon doing so. In May of that year, he returned to the game with the Galaxy. This season he has made 17 appearances, including 13 starts.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who has 18 caps for the U.S. national team, also has a book entitled "Coming Out to Play" that will be released November 25.
