London Catch-up: Missy Franklin becomes the U.S.’s newest golden girl

1. When Missy Franklin barely qualified for the finals of the 200-meter freestyle Monday evening, it seemed to suggest the U.S. teen phenom might not be in good enough form to contend in the 100-meter backstroke just 20 minutes later. Instead, Franklin charged from second place at the turn and sped past Australia's Emily Seebohm in the final 50, winning her first gold medal in a speedy 58.33 seconds. Was winning gold as sweet as Franklin hoped? "It is exceeding my expectations by a hundred billion times," she said.

2. If Franklin's night was a rousing success, then U.S. swimming co-star Ryan Lochte's was the exact opposite. One night after surrendering a lead in the final leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay, Lochte faded again down the stretch of a race, this time losing a medal in the process. Lochte finished fourth in the final of the men's 200-meter freestyle, nearly two seconds slower than gold-medal-winning Yannick Agnel of France, who won the race in a blistering 1:43.14.

3. Despite openly declaring the past few months that they were going to win the gold medal in London, the U.S. men's gymnastics team cracked under pressure and left empty-handed after the team final on Monday. Sam Mikulak put his hands down on a landing during the floor exercise, Danell Leyva and John Orozco faltered during the pommel horse, and Orozco fell trying to land his vault. The flurry of mistakes doomed the Americans to a fifth-place finish behind China, Japan, Great Britain and Ukraine.

4. In an early round rematch of the gold-medal match from the 2008 Olympics, the U.S. women's volleyball team avenged its loss to Brazil from Beijing with a convincing 3-1 victory. The U.S., which has never won gold in women's volleyball, took over the top spot in the world rankings at the end of 2011, ending Brazil's four-year run at No. 1. Brazil has lost five straight international matches to the U.S.

5. Even though Michael Phelps has yet to win an individual medal and Ryan Lochte has struggled in his last two races, other members of the U.S. men's swimming team are picking up the slack. Matt Grevers took gold in the 100-meter backstroke and fellow American Nick Thoman captured silver. The U.S. has won five straight gold medals in the event and has gone first and second in the past two Olympics. Grevers finished second to teammate Aaron Peirsol in Beijing.
