London Catch-Up, Day 15: Goooooooold for Mexico

1. Gold-medal favorite Brazil was left bewildered 29 seconds into the men's football soccer final after Mexico's Oribe Peralta sent the ball sailing into the net with the fastest goal ever in an Olympic final. It was all uphill from there for Brazil, as Mexico goalkeeper Jose Corona made clutch saves against an increasingly intense Brazilian offense. The eventual 2-1 victory by Mexico was a triumph for which the foundation was laid over a decade ago, according to Yahoo! Sports expert Martin Rogers. For now, the soccer-loving country of Mexico has plenty to celebrate with its first Olympic medal in football soccer, a gold one to boot. ¡Viva México!

2. In perhaps an even greater upset, American diver David Boudia will be bringing home the gold medal after a near-perfect performance in the 10m platform diving final. With the win, Boudia became the first American since Greg Louganis to win the men's 10m platform diving gold and the first American diver to win gold since Laura Wilkinson in 2000. China's Qiu Bo and Lin Yue, favorites for the silver and gold going into the final, were visibly shaken after the loss. Considering Boudia jumped from last place in the semifinal to first in the final, the thrill of victory was especially agonizing for the usually dominant Chinese.

3. America's most dominant team in one of America's most popular sports won its fifth straight gold medal and extended its Olympic winning streak to 41 victories in a row. The U.S. women's basketball team may be under-appreciated here in the states, but that didn't stop it from rolling over a French squad that looked good coming into the final. And though Saturday's gold medalists left it all out on the court, perhaps a bit too much attention was paid to Sunday's probable gold medalists Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul as they cheered on their female counterparts from the stands.

4. Somersaulting Brazilians could not be found at Wembley Stadium Saturday, but they were all over the place at Earl's Court after Brazil's women's indoor volleyball team defeated the top-ranked U.S. team 3-1 in the final. The second straight indoor volleyball gold medal for the Brazilian women helped make up for the soccer defeat earlier in the day. The loss by the U.S. continued an Olympic losing streak which began in 1964 when women's indoor volleyball was officially introduced as an Olympic sport.

5. Olympic Stadium, or perhaps Bolt Coliseum, saw a world record-setting 4x100 relay by the stellar team from Jamaica anchored by the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt. Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Yohan Blake and the self-declared "greatest athlete to live" finished in 36.84 seconds, an entire .2 seconds before Team USA crossed the finish line.
