Yevgeny Medvedev scores sick goal of year candidate in KHL (Video)

It’s August, and the only ice on the minds of most pro hockey players these days is being dropped from a bucket in support of ALS research.

But the Kontinental Hockey League is in its preseason, and Ak Bars defenseman Yevgeny Medvedev scored a hell of a goal* in a game against Traktor Chelyabinsk last Friday.

Seriously, light some candles, pour some wine and put on a little R. Kelly next time you undress a goalie like this, sir …

(We have a Justin Azevedo sighting!)

Oh, there’s nothing a goalie hates more than getting the Forsberg. It’s like a skater using a cheat code.

The victim here was Vasily Demchenko, a 20-year-old goalie who spent most of last season in the KHL’s developmental league.

Medvedev, showing some impressive wheels on this breakaway goal, is a 31-year-old defenseman who’s played with Ak Bars for the last seven seasons.

He won gold with the Russians at the 2014 IIHF world championships. Which means he was one of the players who received a brand new Mercedes from Vladimir Putin for the effort. So, pretty much everything’s coming up Yevgeny these days.

* Can a goal of the year candidate come from a preseason game? We tend to dismiss these games as practice against inferior opponents. The only time we actually care about them is when, say, John Scott tries to murder Phil Kessel. What say you: Is a goal a goal no matter when it’s scored?
