Who is the most exciting player in the NHL today?

It’s Vladimir Tarasenko, right?

I ask because whenever his name has come up during a conversation recently, this seems to be the consensus at this moment. That Tarasenko is the most exciting, electrifying, edge-of-your-seat, search-out-the-highlights player in the NHL today.

There’s some merit to this, after the St. Louis Blues forward became a walking social media alert every time he touched the puck last season and he was handed the much-heralded Sportsnet Most Exciting Player of The Year award for 2014-15.

I’ll say this: I don’t there’s a player with his combination of stickhandling, shot power, speed and creativity in the league today. The Pavel Bure comparison is a good one, and not only because Bure was once considered the most must-see player of his generation.

I also think there’s consensus that Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is right there with him.

It’s still an unparalleled joy to watch him skate through the neutral zone with such velocity, pull a power move on a hapless defenseman and rifle home the puck. Perhaps even more than with Tarasenko, you have the feeling something consequential is going to happen with Ovechkin has the puck, even if that end up being the goaltender defecating himself.

I think “most exciting” is most synonymous with goal-scoring, although I think you can find “excitement” in several facets of the game.

Other players that would make my list:

Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators

I could watch 60 minutes of him skating on a continuous loop and be a happy boy. Provided some of those minutes involve him hauling ass to cover up on a defensive play, which is one of my favorite aspects of his speed.

Brendan Gallagher, Montreal Canadiens

Quickly rocketing near the top of my “guy I wish were on my team” list. Love the reckless abandon with which he plays physically, including the way he crashes the net.

Jaromir Jagr, Florida Panthers

I’m not sure how he’s not on anyone’s list, seeing as how there isn’t another player in the NHL whose mere mention gets the attention Jagr still commands. So creative with the puck, even in his low-post offense days. And each goal feels like a milestone.

Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings

I wanted a goalie on here, and that’s a tough call, because the best goalies are usually the most fundamentally sound – and while you can’t spell “fundamental” without “fun,” they usually aren’t.

Which is why someone like Quick entertains me, in the same way that Tim Thomas and Dominik Hasek used to. He flails and flops and makes little miracles during the game when he’s at his best.

You could probably add about five rookies this season to the list -- McDavid, Eichel, Larkin, Domi spring to mind -- but out of respect to sample size and the "new car smell" factor, we left them off.
