Video: Stanley Cup dented in fall on Michael Ryder’s day

The Stanley Cup is making its summer tour with the Boston Bruins and Tuesday was Michael Ryder's turn to celebrate in his hometown of Bonavista, Newfoundland.

Before the day's events, including a parade in Ryder's honor and a public viewing of the Cup, the now-Dallas Stars forward held a send-off rally at a St. John's hotel before taking a helicopter flight to Bonavista.

Blame the wind or blame a weak table leg, because not long after Ryder set the Cup down, it took a tumble.

"First dent of the day"? And here we were worried about what would happen when Brad Marchand had the Cup ...

Though Marchand may have had an inkling something eventful was bound to happen to the Cup on Tuesday after telling Metro News on Monday, "I don't know if I want to give it to him [Ryder] because I'm scared it's not going to come back."

The greatest trophy in sports has a long history of getting dinged up and needing repairs during its summer vacation around the world. That and the daughters of players going to the bathroom inside the bowl. It used to get really banged up before they started having the Cup keepers travel with it everywhere.

We hope this isn't some sort of bad karma for Ryder as his day is just beginning. We imagine the Cup will be strapped in for the helicopter ride to Bonavista with more than enough seat belts to keep it from falling -- a second time.
