UMass, Notre Dame set NCAA record with five-overtime marathon (Video)

UMass and Notre Dame will drop the puck on Game 2 of their Hockey East opening round series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. Hopefully the boys got enough rest after their marathon session Friday night in Game 1.

At 1:24 a.m. ET, after five overtimes and 151:42 of game time, UMass junior forward Shane Walsh was the hero in the 4-3 victory for the Minutemen.

The game now stands are the longest ever in NCAA Division I hockey, breaking the previous record (150:22) set by Quinnipiac and Union during the 2010 ECAC Tournament.

But that wasn’t the only record set at the Compton Family Ice Center Friday night.

UMass netminder Steve Mastalerz made 75 saves, a D-I school record. Yeah, that’s a lot, but not as big of a workload that Buffalo Sabres prospect Cal Peterson faced in the Fighting Irish net. Peterson made 87 saves, breaking the all-time NCAA record set by Kent State’s Dan Abraham (80) in 1987.

"I'm awfully proud and happy for our guys," said UMass head coach John Micheletto, via College Hockey News. "Not only to get the win as the road team in the series, but, to get it the way that we did, obviously, it's not only a big hockey win. It's an emotional win. That's going to hopefully play in our favor. ... Right now, just so proud of our guys. Thinking about how we're going to alter our day schedule tomorrow."

Should the Fighting Irish overcome the emotional loss and even the series, the do-or-die Game 3 will be played Sunday night in South Bend.
